Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

6 Consecutive Quarters of YoY Decline

Let that sink in.

Do you think this will turn around anytime soon? What happens when it gets to 12 quarters of decline?

This year alone Cisco has laid off more then 7000 people. There is no doubt a another huge number is just around the corner in August.

If you're a revenue quota carrier, this is probably the worst tech company to work for at the moment. Plenty are growing significantly, Cisco is not and won't anytime soon if at all.

If you're a talented engineer, why are you working for this company? You can work anywhere if you have the right skills.

If you're a VP, you might as well stay.

Change is in FASB standard. Old FASB rule encouraged companies to be conservative on rev rec. this Q, most companies are switching to new rules which have effect of reducing backlog and increasing revenue.

What is the change in rev rec that will cause backlog to revenue?

Since that original 5500 were layed off more than that number have been hired.

Acquired, not hired - and I don't believe we've acquired anything like that number in the last 9 months. In fact, we struggle to keep our engineering headcount up. The only hires I know of in our BU is a SVP and a couple of directors.

Most of the hiring is through the Cisco university programs. These are merely no show jobs, which Cisco uses to tell Wall Street that the company is still hiring.

2wyr - lol, so why not leverage the existing high talent and/or use voluntary packages like other companies that view their employees as stakeholders instead?

I think a lot of people are ignoring a key fact when they go about redundancies. Since that original 5500 were layed off more than that number have been hired.. You could argue these LR activities are just realigning the business. A good thing for Cisco surely?

I'm still a current employee, but if I get hit, I will bear no ill will towards the company as they have treated me very well.

I thought that too until I got hit. Looking at who got hit and who didn't, then watching how the manager repositioned the rest of the team to make certain people more expendable while making people the manager brought with them from another company less expendable made me re-think my ill will.

It is what it is, and I will look back on my time at Cisco as a great learning experience. My skills grew a lot while there, and I gave as much to Cisco as I took away from Cisco. I made good friends and worked with great people.

But, as with any where else, politics are at play and I have little respect for companies who let good people go because they're "expensive" or old in favor of keeping people who do the bare minimum to keep their jobs.

I love working at Cisco and enjoy the company of my peers. It saddens me to see that the company has entered into the mature phase of its product and service lines (that point where everything becomes a commodity and competition becomes price-based).

Cisco will certainly be around for a while, but there is going to be a lot of pain as the company shrinks, off-shores and rationalizes which BUs to keep. No company or job lasts forever. By the way, the same fate will befall all of our competitors as we all join in the race to the bottom (pricing).

I'm still a current employee, but if I get hit, I will bear no ill will towards the company as they have treated me very well.

FUD..... More like straight facts!

Cisco is going to change the direction of IT? You might find Amazon has already done that whilst Cisco sat and watched it happen.

Good bye Cisco it was nice knowing you.

Where is the talent? Sales? A company filled with sleazy salesmen & politicians is not changing the course and direction of the IT space.

What is FUD in the post? There have been 6 q's of revenue decline, and next quarter in spite of super positive changes in revenue recognition which will force backlog to revenue, we have issues. Having folks deny these issues. Part of the problem is that we don't speak the truth to the outside world or each other. It is great to have school spirit, but we need clea eyes and honesty.

Sure, they have the cash and talent. The problem is, they don't know how to weaponize it.

Let me tell you why: because Cisco has the CASH and the TALENT to change the course and direction of the IT space. Who ELSE can say that ? You FUD-turdster !
