Facebook is planning to move WhatsApp off IBM's public cloud, source says

A YUUGE blow for IBM's Cloud and Softlayer. But I'm sure the Exec.'s will still trumpet that IBM's a market leader in this space as they RA a bunch off folks in Softlayer very shortly. . .

Facebook plans to move WhatsApp, which is used by more than 1 billion people, from IBM's SoftLayer cloud to Facebook's own data centers.

The WhatsApp messaging app relies on more than 700 high-end IBM SoftLayer servers.

WhatsApp is one of IBM's top five customers for its cloud service, which lags behind market leader Amazon Web Services, as well as Microsoft Azure.

WhatsApp was a small company before they took off, so they were using SoftLayer before IBM acquired SoftLayer. That's how it happened. They would never have chosen IBM for their cloud platform, as you said 31wv. Who would??

Even more shocking is that they were using ibm to begin with.

This was coming, we knew this ever since FB acquired WA. FB is building a competing product, and it just makes sense for them to bring this in house. They will also be re-platforming it.
