Thread regarding Sears layoffs

How to deal with this?

I work in the OBU and have come across a number of bullies in my time, and more than just bullies, really cruel, heartless people.

There's one currently on the team, she would happily stab you and your family in the back just to enhance her own profile.

What's worse than that is the company/HR tolerate it and do nothing leaving us and people like the OP to suffer. maybe it's intentional, get people to leave voluntarily as opposed to severance.

Obu is a city in japan. What are all these Sears employees doing there and who is paying them?

for those of you reading this thread @fiw is a great example of the bully at work, @fiw how about you come out from behind your annonymous thread and tell people that to their face? No I didn't think so, stay in your bedroom typing. My Indian colleagues are the nicest, most hardworking, smartest people I work with. The bullies I encounter are ALWAYS homebred.

When I have had problems in the past I have always gone to my HR rep, and they have always been able to help. If we don't bring issues to their attention, they have no way of knowing there are issues. I also know of a listening channel that the company has on the intranet site to field anonymous comments that might be of use.

To bnt I work in the OBU, my leader hasn't been seen or heard from since last year!!!! so there is no one to step in. Guess you just have to put up with it and suffer until you find a new job sad but true

@ghz by in large I like your post. Some good advice. What I find ironic is that when I actually do my best that's when the bullies come after me, trying to drag me down. I stay away from them it's just that they come after me, it's as if they abhor people who work hard and do good work it's as if it threatens them. This is where leaders and HR need to step in, the bullies are suppressing great talent. while these issues may seem trivial they are real problems and only get attention when people break.

@NFYBqXy-ghz "Acting as a united team is our best way forward"!?! Really!?! When has Eddie ever promoted this idea? His idea was having different departments fight against each other.

I work in OBU and do not feel the same way. There are very good and caring managers and leaders within the team. Find one- you and your peers likely know who they are- and ask if you can discuss confidentially. I hope that I would be one of them and I would be happy to talk and help you thru your challenges. We need good, committed people who care about the company and take pride in their work. Focus on doing your best and staying out of the way of those who would undermine their team and the company. Yes, these are challenging times. Acting as a united team is our best way forward.

I guess it just depends on where you are in corporate. Our leaders arent bullies at all. Our leaders basically try to instill in us that all of us are needed to try to turn this ship around. Some dont handle stress well. If I ever send an email with a bad tone, my boss says something to me like watch your tone. We all have our days due to stress, but then you also need to speak up if comfortable. I will say straight to my boss hey I am not stupid if he ever says something I dont like. And I realize that he is under stress too. We all have to check one another in this environment.

I support our h1b visa employees but one disadvantage of them and for them is that they are so fearful of losing their employer sponsored visas they never speak up, an over saturated h1b workforce like Sears becomes a workplace where nothing is challenged and bullies can take advantage, who stands up for them?

Maybe the bullies too are being failed also? No mentors, stress, no support, other bullies, it's a perfect cauldron for generating poor/aggressive workers. It's a shame we don't have a chief people officer to correct the situation.

@cqh

Having worked at corporate, that behavior isn't because of an absent leader. That behavior is from the leaders.

Or when they are not called out. Evil thrives when good people say nothing.

My guess is this person has a bad leader or most likely an absent leader, bullies thrive when their leaders are bad/missing in action

I think I know who the OP is talking about, I just stay out of her way as I know there is no way of dealing with it. I have spoken to my boss and HR about this individual as have others but they didn't do anything, what more can you do? I'm just looking to leave to get away from people like that.

It's difficult. Before someone says just leave which is more difficult than it makes out my only advice is to stand up to the bulllies (assuming they are your same level or below) it's much harder standing up to the bullies when they are higher ups but it can still be done. Stand up to them, call them out, don't take their harrassment. Log their bad behavior. Once a list has formed send it to your boss or HR, neither will do anything but when it comes to the company firing you or laying you off you will have time stamped evidence you suffered harassment. Again that most likely won't do anything though it may place a little fear of litigation in their minds which is a victory. Highlight your concerns to colleagues or good leaders, strength in numbers may help you. Whatever you do don't just accept it, bullies whether in the professional world or real world need standing up to.
