Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Anyone "win" a breakroom "makeover"?

There was a contest for credit and the stores won a breakroom makeover, up to $2000.00. The money can only be spent on the breakroom, so no luncheons, gift cards for associates, prizes, etc.--in other words, no real benefits for associates.

The money has to be spent by August 1st if I remember correctly.

Anyone think this is a gimmick? It's like corporate knows that most stores already have what they need for the breakroom, so they won't end up paying out much because there isn't a need for anything or if something is needed, it's going to exceed the "winnings".

What does a breakroom need that it doesn't already have that can be bought with the "winnings"? And what could be purchased with $2000 or less? Not much. Commercial grade furniture is expensive.

Our store won this stupid "contest" and we most likely won't use the money because we don't need anything in our breakroom that we don't already have: tables, chairs, fridge, microwave, TV.

Oh, we do need a sink, but we don't have the plumbing for it anywhere near the breakroom, so that would cost at least $5k to get it installed, and it would be an impractical project as the plumbing is under a concrete slab.

Why don't they put their money where their mouth is and actually do something that will benefit associates?

Wow, never heard about it. Just imagine if it had been divided up and turned into a small bonus for some employees instead. :\

Were it my store, it would have been better spent on the escalators and elevator that break down too often.

You cannot use the funds on food, parties, bonuses or payouts to associates. It all has to be spent on the breakroom.

Most breakrooms already have what they need. If a store's breakroom needs something, the proceeds from the winnings likely isn't enough to pay for it (e.g. repairs, new furniture).

A pizza party, BBQ cookout or $10 gift cards for all associates would have been more meaningful to associates, not to mention cheaper for the company.

Well, the company knows that the winning stores won't spend the money by the deadline (August 1st).

we weren't allowed to buy or use anything that came off the shelves or any food items. We were only allowed to paint, or clean the room. We tried to use the money to buy ice cream, sodas and water and we got in trouble. We also had to get approval from the DM or the building manager to paint and it had to be white. After we painted, cleaned up, rearranged and make the place look nice within a month we were told we were closing. What a company!!

I wonder if the credit contests are regional? Ours was to individually win a top $25 prize in Sears gift cards which included PA sales as a separate $25 prize. The $2000 worth of soda & popsicles sounds pretty good. Except for the mice, our break room isn't too bad though.

The cashiers would appreciate the $25/10/5 in cash more. I think the CAC lead took any extra monies that were given to the store to take herself out for dinner. I'm not supposed to know that.

Sure. I get that. But maybe I am odd to say this, but I always appreciate a free soda or water or something for lunch. I don't really know, but Sears stores don't sell food (other than sometimes candy), so there isn't food just laying around.

Most stores don't really need it these days anyway. When we got furniture like sofas or chairs that were returned, we put them in our breakroom after 605 had scanned them out. When the microwave died, we just took another one off the shelf. And the employees pretty much took whatever they wanted off the counter to eat. I am not mentioning all this just to be funny, but to point out that with employee morale at rock bottom, people just don't care anymore.

Why not buy something that cant go bad like soda or water too. You could buy a chair or two. It probbably doesnt have to be commercial grade.

I am more shocked that you actually won honestly that is enough to surprise me. If this is truth why not do what the @jkp fill it up with goodies ice cream, drinks, snacks that are basic wins (not only inside the refrigerator, but outside in the break room since summer is here why not be hydrated all summer). Add condiments and accessories for the kitchen. Cable would be a good one.

Although I agree maybe just add it to the associates on there pay check, nope that wont happen at all...

They do the breakroom makeover as a prize all the time. Our store won it a few years ago. We painted, replaced chairs, and filled up our freezer with popsicles and ice cream.

Paper plates, spoons, forks, etc. Do a room make over, paint. new construction paper on the board, New pictures of the employees or a employee of he month. Buy a can opener, waffle grill, ice machine, be creative with the money.
