Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Tired of the dysfunction...

I am in charge of the backroom at a Sears store.

My team, if you can call it that, has no respect for my authority and will laugh in my face or throw a tantrum when I tell them to do something, depending on which associate I speak to.

I thought I had a good rapport with the ASM, but I guess not. This ASM told me to "stop arguing" with an associate when I simply told (or coached) the associate that he must follow store processes and cannot do things the way he wants to, undermining my authority even further, rather than standing with me and helping me enforce the policies and procedures of the company.

The store manager is of no support and is not approachable. He hides in his office all day.

I assign jobs but they may or may not get done. If the jobs are "done", they are done half-a--ed. I have one particular associate that point-blank refuses to do certain jobs and the store manager knows this and does nothing. I don't bother with a write-up, because I'll probably be given the what-for if I did one due to his unapproachable, unsupportive demeanor.

It feels like everything falls on my shoulder.

I have no help. If stuff needs done, I am usually the one doing it.

I am frustrated with just being here. I am looking for a new job elsewhere as we speak.

Judging from similar posts to this board, my experience isn't abnormal. There's a culture problem in this company.

Not worth the $12.50/hr.

I didn't know my boss posted on here. Don't worry once our inventory is over we both won't have jobs so you can quit complaining about us. Ah but I'll have moved on because I'm getting my degree.

OP here. Just to be clear, I am not saying that I'm a perfect boss by any means. However, I feel that I am pretty fair and easygoing. It's not like I'm super strict and my team decided to plot a coup against me. I'm the type to let small, minor things "slide" the first time with just a friendly reminder.

Some people just don't feel that rules are for them, or they are just point-blank lazy. I have a few individuals on my team that feel they are only there to watch over the MPU SNC for pickups and to unload and process trucks, nothing more. There's lot more to backroom than MPU and trucks, trust me!

I've seen firsthand the questionable quality of hires, and not just my team, but teams throughout the store. Turnover is spectacularly awful, the average new hire just "disappears" without notice, usually shortly after onboarding and training. No-call/no-shows are a regular thing, so is tardiness.

There's just no work ethic at all. It's not like we can hold out for better hires, there are spots we have to fill. Basically a warm body as a placeholder. Otherwise the store would be empty, and we can't work our more reliable old timers round the clock every single day.

I don't know how many times I've conducted an interview for whatever positions we needed and was impressed with the interviewee, only to find them uninterested once they are told about pay, so we get low-grade, sorry to say.

As long as you have managers above you who won't enforce policies, this will never change. It was like that in my store awhile too; now we actually have a really great store manager.
