Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Severance Pay

I received 8 weeks severance pay because I had over 18 years with the company. I was full-timer all of my years, I received my severance pay just like a regular pay check. They did not take out for medical and dental at all, I was glad. The severance pay is only 70 hours a pay, equals to 35 hours a week. The max for severance is only 8 weeks. I look back at my years with Sears, and I am kinda of sad it is all over. Nice group of folks I worked with. Thank God for the lesson learned. Thank You everyone on this board for all of the information needed.

Can confirm. I was only at Sears HQ for a year and when I got laid off in Feb I got 10 weeks severance.

8 weeks max is an almost universal standard across the business world for rank and file employees. This of course matches exactly the 60 days notice/60 days compensation required of the WARN Act.

Of course Sears wasn't doing that as until recently there was massive denial about the dire straits the company was in.

8 weeks max wasn't even the standard for Sears 8 months ago, and I know this from personal experience. People were getting 6-8 weeks for less than a year. About a year and a half ago it was 10 weeks MINIMUM for HQ positions. This company is laying off so many people they have to take cost cutting measures on their cost cutting measures! Reducing severance on layoffs because it would be too expensive otherwise.

Good luck. File for unemployment, take a couple of weeks to process your feelings, and figure out what is next.

Wish you the best of luck. If you can take a few days to get this out of your system.....a week if you can.

And yes.....it is so refreshing to be out of that leaderless and toxic environment. And yes.....I am speaking from experience as I was suddenly let go as well earlier in year. There will be some bitterness initially but I will bet that in time you will see they did you a huge favor. The future is not good and will be a painful death by 1000 cuts as the company liquidates

Good Luck to you but 8 weeks is insulting! My opinion is min one week for each year of service. I think working here we become numb to how negative and toxic the workplace is and next job will be a breath of fresh air. Looking forward to working at a place that does not give me a knot in my stomach will be so refreshing .
