Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Why do External Hires get a Higher Base Salary than Internal Candidates for the Same Jobs?

I understand that each job posting has a salary range. However if you are being recruited from outside Verizon into Verizon, you have a higher salary range than an internal candidate would have.

Example: If you were to get hired from VZW retail to VZW B2B sales as an Account Manager and accept a salary for $X amount of dollars, and Joe Snuffy gets recruited from the competition to VZW B2B, Joes too end of the salary range may be up to 10k higher? Anyone know why? Are they first to be laid off since they have a higher salary?

It's because it costs more to hire puppets. They don't want internal hires cause they already know the job and it is harder for them to make you do their biddings.

@1puk that guy is an egotistical joke. "My specific expertise is advanced beyond your subhuman race, I would only use zip recruiter to hire, not any of you verizon lunkheads"

Douche. Probably waxx off to the Internet all day and pretends to work...

I think it is more or less standard anywhere. The external candidate might have competing offers. The internal one is much less likely to be also looking outside. It takes more effort to join a company than move around inside, and so you need to make the offer more attractive.

There is a general attitude here that anything that VZ does is wrong/bad/stupid/evil. And that may be the case a lot of the time, but some of it is almost universal or good practice (see the thread about borrowing to pay pension fees for example). We don't have to give VZ a break, but crying wolf about everything sort of hides the bad stuff. Of which there is plenty

It's because they need to pay more to attract talent to jump on the sinking ship. Those already working for Vz are screwed anyways so they don't have to offer as much.

There is no logic behind it and they can't even explain how they came up the offer. The best advice I can give you is get out of Verizon!!! No position is safe and like mentioned before you are just a number. They could care less about you!

Every company is like this.

Indeed there are good people who want to move around internally, but my experience with Verizon lifers has not been good. I'm in a role that requires specific expertise. I would never hire an internal VZ candidate for this type of job.

Its because you know too much. Front line experience combined with access to the corporate crap hole makes you very dangerous to insecure managers trying to hold on until retirement.

It's a way to control costs. Plenty of people are too lazy or too comfortable to actively look or demand a raise.

You are correct, moving out of retail is very hard. In most cases I've seen, you have to make a connection on the B2B side that can act as your advocate.

Moving out of retail is like pulling teeth .

I applied to over 60 internal positions and got 0 interviews. 2 IT degrees 0 interviews outside of retail. But the second I apply To a retail position got an interview .

VZW logic is flawed . How can one advance their career if they don't promote from within . Why offer tuition reimbursement if the only option in retail is sales / sales management .

Just my past experience
