Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Temporary Store Closing....

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-sears-oakbrook-temporary-closing-0621-biz-20170620-story.html Odd that they are temporarily closing the store (for 9 months). Also note that apparel is not mentioned in the story as a remaining merchandise category.

Of course its a Seritage store in a very high income area. I liked this store because I could drive down there a short distance and skirt the Cook Co taxes my local store has to charge. Nice store by Sears standards and great people. I'll miss it.

So assuming the company is still alive in nine months, what exactly is the store going to do for employees? I'd assume they're not going to keep their full staff on the payroll, if they even use any of them to do the necessary remodeling for what they claim they're doing. The ones who get laid off, if they're smart, will not be treating it as what layoffs used to actually mean and will have moved on by the time the store is near reopening. So maybe you'll have a handful of people left from the remodel, and then the store will have to somehow find a bunch (admittedly fewer with the reduced footprint, but still...) of people willing to work for the local minimum wage and who will for some time have absolutely no idea what they're doing for at least a couple months. Sounds like a recipe for winning!

Excluding leased departments, they can squeeze the entire current offerings of the store onto one floor, or 75,000 square feet. Most Kmart stores are 75,000 to 80,000 square feet; several include full appliance departments too.
