Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Why we stay here?

Everyone currently working for Chevron wants to continue working here. Why? Answer: Why not. The pay and benefits are great, practically exceptional. The job is not overly difficult. The majority of workers don't have to work weekends and holidays. Last of all, employees are very rarely held accountable for ineptitude. -- All current employees would gladly stay onboard until the company closes its doors forever.

-ahav is right. Unfortunately I was caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time. The DWEP team I was on was mostly all a carry over from another completed project. Most of the outsider fill in personnel on the team were the ones to be laid off last year. If you were on in the clique you were definitely on the outside after April last year. I would have preferred to work another 4 years and then retired early but I ended up being retired 4 years more than planned. And to tell the truth I do not miss going to Chevron every day. The last 5 years on 2 different project teams which did not go any where were mind numbing. I will be financially OK, I just would have been a little better OK if still working. Just not as happy.

@axpw, unfortunately what keeps the unproductive albino supervisor on the job is a spineless management that's more afraid of perceptions by others or being accused of racism for getting rid of her. The lack of accountability in this company is rampant. The company has established mechanisms in place to rid themselves of unproductive employees, but I guess certain protected classes are exempt from that. Thank God I only had to endure a few final years at Chevron before I was financially ready for retirement. I was demoralized the last 5 years working there, but hung in and now I'm all the happier for being out.

You get paid for attending lots of meetings that gets nowhere and lead to more meetings, passing on reports from vendors to your bosses who push it to his boss and so on, complicate everything to justify your role, doing 40% training and only 60% real work for the younger staff, rewarded more for scribing notes for your bosses rather than competent technical work, ... ... ... LIFE IS GOOD! Why do you want to leave?

People stay here because no one else will hire them. Face it, Chevron management considers a 'value' employee as someone who is really good at spreadsheet and powerpoint displays and constantly spouts off about Chevron PC values at every opportunity. What do you think the term 'Chevroid' means? Working at Chevron is like the book 'One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest'. Ofcourse, most people here have probably never read the book or seen the movie.

Don't blame PC. Chevron has always been an odd company....determined to be a high-cost, bureaucratic behemoth....the "Chevron Way" .... Gotta love it.

I'm not LBGT though I see them daily. I work nights, some Fridays off, weekends and holidays, more frequently against my will. Being over 60 in America, pretty much my only option is to hang on. Its certainly not the abuse I have to endure that keeps me here, it's the reinforcement I get twice a month. That is my only reason.

Back in 1994 or 1995, Chevron first allowed "domestic partners" to be included in an employee's medical plan. The company allowed domestic partners before allowing family members, like a parent or brother/sister to be included. Family values flew out the window with this company long ago.

JW and top echelon are more concerned about political correctness, multiculturalism, diversity and gender celebration, maintaining a high dividend to keep the 'dividend aristocrat' status, and having a company culture that emphasizes and rewards meetings, groupthink, spreadsheets and power point displays over getting actual work done in exploring and producing oil and gas. This will not change until JW and the entire top 2 levels of management are replaced.

Employees follow leadership's footsteps, not the other way around. If demoralization is rampant, it's not the employee's to blame. They take the cue from management. If management doesn't bring their A-game, it's over for Chevron. Nothing difficult to understand. JW and the top echelon need to work on getting better management if they expect things to get better. Stop blaming the low price of oil for our woes. Low oil prices is only the challenge. We need real leaders to move the ship through this storm.
