Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

A bit of career advice for Allstate folks (and others)

Seems like a ton of anxiety and worry over potential job losses, I left in 2014 so I am not directly impacted. In my 28 long career I have been laid off two times, so if you'd like - hear me out - I will give my best advice (whether you work at Allstate or not)...

Corporations are not your friend, parent or caregiver. it is a transaction, not a 'relationship'. You provide a service in return for money.

Automation, drones, robots, artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc. in the Insurance Industry is the new reality. If a robot or code can do your job, you will not have a job. Period. Do things robots can't do (it will become increasingly difficult as robots are getting better at an alarming rate)

Layoffs and periods of under/unemployment must be factored into your financial plans. Don't get into a mortgage and car loans that assume a 30 year stretch of uninterrupted income.

Save money. Don't be a dumb--s. Save. Lots. Of. Money!

A six month cushion is a minimum. Eat ramen and drive a 10 year old vehicle. (Note: if you have worked at Allstate for 10+ years and don't have 2 nickels to rub together, you are an idiot.)

You seem to be the only reasonable person here.

How about you don't work at a company like Allstate that pays 30% below market rate

Having a six month buffer is actually extremely intelligent. Allows you time to search for a great job instead of one that just puts food on the table in case you are laid off. Dave Ramsey would agree.

Yeah, I'll live in a van down by the river. If no one spent money then our capitalistic society would crash ! Wall Street would cease to exist, banks wouldn't loan money out, people would keep their money in jars under their beds. All the car manufacturers would go bankrupt if we all drove 10 year old cars and never purchased new cars .

So don't enjoy life and assume you will be layed off? That's got to be the dumbest advice I've ever heard. Not everyone who has kids to put kids through college can have a 6 month cushion. You are the idiot!
