Optum Technology IT staff layoffs

This is true, up to 10% for Optum Technology IT staff is what we have been told, it is probably larger by the sounds of things. They are targeting multiple pay grades from Senior Director on down to Business Analysts. Many of the resources have 5-10+ years at the company. Some were very surprising to me, i.e., they weren't all poorer performers.

This is obviously not specific to a single site, MN-based, Hartford CT-based employees, further West and South as well. Hartford seems to be losing someone almost on a daily basis. Folks are nervous and rightfully so. Wide scale layoff folks.

Meanwhile they are bringing in 100's if not 1000's of young interns through the "TDP" or Technology Development Program. These kids are right out of college, go through a few rotations around different organizations (mentored and trained by senior IT staff) and are then placed permanently. Meanwhile traditional hiring is very difficult. Pretty obvious what they are doing here. Business as usual, cold, calculated business.

What state? What department? I was laid off on Aug 30th as well, trying to get a petition together for a trade act certification. They are clearly backfilling these US based jobs with “OGS” positions. https://www.doleta.gov/tradeact/

This will at least help those of us who are affected get some training and re-enter the job force.

Optum State Government Systems under Lee Valenta had large IT layoffs today. NJ, CT, MA, VT, and others. This after a great earning call and 18%yoy numbers?

There is still more to come folks. I am hearing last round will be in November. Since Q1, they have been performing downsizing exercises monthly. Horrible place to work, morale 100% in the tank as employees watch their teams slowly dwindle; worried if they will be next. Calling it an unhealthy atmosphere is an understatement.

This is NOT fake. We were told to keep it hush, but you could tell it was mostly older workers who had years of experience that were getting let go. We were even told that we were good employees. How ironic! Work is that all of those left are either people that management feels that if they let go will hurt the company or young, inexperienced, cheaper employees. Just a waste. What is the company going to do in January?

I was laid off on Tuesday morning and work at Optum Technology in Innovation, Research, Development. I am not sure how many were let go but at least twenty. From what I understand no formal announcement has gone out yet and it was a variety of people. I had a good performance review, and heard it was not performance based, but at some point a manager has to decide who should go. My understanding is we were about 12m short so had to recover and there has also been a huge reorganization. It was very poorly handled and morale is very low there now with many people looking for positions elsewhere as a result. We were offered a severance package and encouraged to apply internally for other positions.

This is not a rumor anymore. They're done laying off D-Level and Manager Level. Starting Q3, they will put the rest of us on the chopping block based on your "Mid-Year" review; by the way, UHG/Optum have never had any "Mid-Year" review before. Seemed like last year great performance and amazing revenue won't save our job....good luck everyone...

June 2017, my husband laid off from Optum after 18 years total. Transferred from UHC to Optum Group approx 3 years ago. 16 out of 90 in his group laid off.

Was not let go today but alarm bells have been ringing. Some key Senior Management stepped down about 6 months ago. Since then it has been nothing but red flags, "re-orgs" in Network and Security, IT budgets absolutely slashed, finance auditing assets, all contractors let go or converted, then hiring freeze and reqs cut. Today heads rolled, people who were very senior staff were let go, Directors, Senior Technical Specialists, and many more. Not exactly sure what is happening but it does not look good. Might be time to jump ship.

June 27, 2017. This is not fake. I spent 120 hours in the last two weeks (no overtime pay) doing a very important project and received rave reviews for my work. At 8 am this morning I was informed by my boss and my boss' boss that I was "laid off." I definitely couldn't see this coming. I thought Optum was a great place to work. No more.

This is true. I was let go today after many years with the company. Never had a poor performance appraisal, always got the bonuses. I was told that it was part of a huge RIF happening today in our organization, but of course we have no way to know who kept their jobs and who didn't. But this is not fake - it's happening and it happened to me today. I suspect I made more than some of the newer, younger people they are bringing in. It's hard to prove that's the rationale but it's certainly a way to reduce costs.

I have worked for Optum Technology/UHG for almost 9 yrs. I like it here but the internal hiring and opportunity is difficult. For some it has worked. The layoffs are really sad to hear, especially when you see fresh out of college students getting the chance to come in and rotate and learn, while you sit at your seat and can't even get a chance at an interview. Maybe one day they will allow current employees to rotate and learn. There are plenty of us out here that want to.

At least 5 people from my larger team got laid off today, this is definitely true and more is coming. Never seen something like this ever happen at Optum/UHG in my 6 years here. This is so sad. And as mentioned by someone above, most of these are exceptional performers.

I work at Optum Technology, and I can vouch for the fact that many people are getting let go each month. As noted in other threads, the layoffs are definitely targeted towards higher paid employees. Which makes sense from a financial standpoint, but ignores the fact that many of these employees were highly paid because they were highly productive. Replacing these workers with younger "TDP" employees may reduce cost, but it will reduce productivity, morale, and quality along with it.
