Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

The IOT group in Ireland was associated with the Quark Solutions Division (QSD)

The IOT group in Ireland was associated with the Quark Solutions Division (QSD) - which had a weird track record of not producing products. They would go through the motions, march through the POP process, then poof project cancelled for whatever reason. "Hey - we are the 22nm lead vehicle" - then poof actually the financials didn't work out. "Hey - we have these great ATOM based SoCs" then poof oh yeah, about those SOPHIA designs we were recycling ...

It wasn't for lack of talent and engineering diligence ... it was more a lack of conviction by the senior level management in IOTG.

Of course, IOTG is more a bunch of tribal groups duct taped together anyway - the various teams like TSD, ASD, PED and QSD had no idea what each other was doing, and frequently competed with each other rather than supported each other. It was a weird place where no one trusted what anyone else said or had confidence in another team delivering.

And now throw into the mix an enormously expensive acquisition of Mobileye - obviously some headcount and spending targets have to be adjusted to allow for the new group.

What is really appalling is IOTG is held up as one of Intel's big growth areas.

Will the Quark CPU EOL? The sales told me it will be still alive within 2-3 years.

Hi, the cancelled projects are there because of bad marketing requirements or bad management decision. The management should be laid off not the engineers who are working on the projects day and night when asked in tight schedule timelines. They have kept all directors and VPs, who should have been gone first. then it would be an example to get the right project and get revenue attached to it. Currently the VP and management is still doing same things, without any market creating solutions and dont know where are the customers. there needs to be cut first at TOP not at the bottom.

... cant agree that all cancelled projects were a result of bad input from the sales team ... sometimes you have to make a strategic (read "money losing") decision to show you are serious before you can start getting DWs. After the cancellation of the latest QSD SoCs (not on public roadmap) any credibility of QSD is zero with INDU and AUTO customers.

You're missing Atlas Peak 2 and Greyridge on your list there. All cancelled projects were a result of bad direction on SOC features from the sales teams.

I don't want to disparage the Ireland engineering team - but how many is "plenty"? 4? 5? Q1000, Atlas Peak and the Edison/Galileo chipsets? Maybe you worked on backend timing closure or something so everything seemed to ship ... I worked on far more cancelled projects than shipping ones.

Not sure where OP got the impression that QSD doesn't make products. They've PRD'd plenty of products, and nearly all on A-step. They've been a model of efficient execution, and the few designs that indeed were cancelled can be eaisily explained by upper management's interference and attempts at obviously flawed products.
