Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Valuble Skills I have learned While working at Sears.

There are rumors that sears is going under. True Eddie is having to saw some dead logs out of the river, but there has never been a better opportunity to shine. Every great leader in the history of business has had to do things that they were not happy about doing, Its not Eddies fault, Its just the circumstances. Amazon has used an unfair advantage to get one up on Sears and many of our competitors.

Here are some tips I have learned the many years I worked at sears that have helped me shine and prosper.

  1. Start Each Day Focusing On Your Goals – Invest 5 or 10 minutes every day thinking about why you are working and what your work will help you to achieve. Do you want a new car… Maybe you want to invest in your children’s education… Or to buy a new home. Whatever your underlying goal is, thinking about it can help you to stay focused on how every act as a retailer gets you closer to achieving it.

  2. Use Your Commute Wisely – Your commute time is the perfect time to get yourself pumped up for the day. A great way to do this is to listen to upbeat music that inspires you and gets your blood pumping. If that doesn’t work for you, you can listen to audio books which will help you to build your skills and knowledge.

  3. Smile and Act in a Positive Way – Even if you are encountering difficulties, you should never let others see you sweat. Instead, put on a smile and move forward. Research has shown that even a forced smile will help you to reduce you level of stress and put you in a better mood… And that will translate into better results in your customer and team member interactions.

  4. Stay Focused On What Is Important – These days it seems like everyone has too much to do and with smartphones, tablets, social networking, email and texting it seems like we can be interrupted at any time. The solution is to stay focused and remember the 80/20 rule. You will get 80% of your results form 20% of your effort. So before you let the 80% of your activity that is unproductive get in the way get focused on what is important – supporting customers and employees. You will get more done, you will get better results and you will feel better about it.

  5. Turn Off At the End of The Day – Once you have completed your workday you should fill in the remainder of your day activities that help you to relax and recharge. Play with your kids… Work on your favorite hobby… Or read a good book. The result will be that you not only shift your mind out of “work mode” but that you will sleep better, eat better and recharge your batteries so you are ready for the next day in retail.

@1fcl Won't lie it was one of the big reasons I shopped at Amazon a lot the whole tax free. But yes I think what gave Amazon the upper hand was always their amazing customer service. Sears has the worse customer service because people arent motivated.

As their is advantages their is advantages. Sears could have the product on hand to add pressure to Amazon why not price match on the spot if the customer request it? Why not innovate and become more efficient at the end of the day they didn't invest. Sears could of become the perfect hybrid of retail/online store.

Amazon has used an unfair advantage? Get over yourself. All the companies use whatever advantage they can. Sears just needs someone to blame other than themselves. You would be sure that if Sears could get around sales tax they would, but guess what, even with sales tax Amazon still has better prices than Sears BEFORE sales tax. Unfair advantage... because mom and pop stores have the same advantage of having Hoffman Estates and other Government bodies to gift them land and tax breaks.

Do you really think people shopped at Amazon only because tax wasn't collected? No its because the awesome customer service, the low prices and the ease of shopping, Sears has none of these, even on its website. You don't see people rushing back to the brick and mortar stores now that the loophole has been closed.

As for your advice, it sounds like something an enabler would say to a victim of abuse....you are just as bad as Sears

Karen , these are valuable coping skills but just being gone from that environment solves all that mental anguish. There is life beyond SHLD, it may not be a bed of roses all the time but at least that stress is gone.

Nice post. A bit of encouragement never hurts, would be nice however if a leader of any kind actually promoted this type of positive sentiment at HQ (outside of the typical town halls). Where I work it's just bullying, apathy and ambivalence. Thank you though.

The title of this post mentions skills, but there is nothing here that would look good on a resume.

What I do I just do my job I do the bare minimum I don't let the managers get to me they scream at me I just worker slower and act dumb. Its worked with me they know they can't manipulate me and they know they can't fire me because they end up losing so in the end of the day I leave home happy and no problems what so ever.
