Thread regarding Sears layoffs

What do you think will happen to Sears In Home Appliance Services

Currently work as a Service Tech. Our leaders tell us all is going to be fine as we are profitable but every day we see more and more leave. Got a great offer from a major competitor who has hired other techs who tell me to leave.

I look at this board but see little about home services.

My manager tells me all is ok but I don't think he is being up front. What is future for home services Appliance repairs. I am just tired of living Day to day not knowing whether I will have a job. All the leadership seems to be worried about is what we sell. I am pretty sure I will take that offer though

Haha, yeah I took the compliance courses. They are great...only no one practiced any of it. I also took the required week long management training...about 6-7 months after I'd been doing the job. All was a total waste of time and money. We weren't given the time to practice any of what was taught. Met with the VP several times...he talked a good game. All smoke and mirrors. We finished up training on a Friday...Monday rolled around and it was back to grilling us on conference calls as to why our techs weren't selling enough. They called it "coaching"....we all knew what that meant. I had techs sick to their stomachs because they couldn't make the sales. They would end up quitting because of the stress. At the local level...everything was the techs fault. And I do mean everything.

@3uyv I have to say he speaks truth I see it in my store how they push the whole SPP's and PA along with your sale. They really push them big time for those to happen. You can do an amazing sale, but if you didn't get a PA they push it on you that the PA didn't happen.

@3uyv I am really surprised to hear you say you were encouraged as a manager to "threaten" anyone as we have strict compliance courses at HE that specifically tell us NOT to do that. Didn't you have to take the compliance courses we have to take? If not, what a shame.

Good job on taking the new job. Glad you got out...like I did. I am a former IH Manager and am very thankful I left when I did. That was truly a very stressful job and in no way helped me become a better manager. Threatening employees to sell home warrenties and micromanaging them out the door is not a viable business model. I could write a book on the things that went on there...but I'll leave it alone. Some how repairing appliances and making customers happy was the furthest from their mind. It will go down with the ship.

I'm happy for you and best of luck to you.

Thanks for all advice. Even if services is sold off no guarantee of a job plus I see far too much BS and Overhead which would make me wonder why anyone would buy us.

I took that offer and will give notice Monday. Too risky and too much unknown to stay. This company I am going to is about fixing appliances.....not trying to sell, not pushing loyal customers away for cash calls although they try to run cash calls, and we are not micromanaged to death and not getting calls from my manager if I am 10 minutes long on a job. It has just gotten to stressful

Actually feel good for first time in years

Thanks again for opinions

Believe nothing. If you have a viable offer elsewhere, take it. I was a senior manager and my leadership repeatedly said that our area would not have any layoffs. On 6/12, almost half of our team (including me) was let go. The only way to guarantee a steady job is to find one outside of SHC.

Home services has been for sale since last year. Interested buyer are wait for for the fire sale. Techs are quitting like crazy, if you have a better opportunity take it.

What zgp said. The other problem is that whoever may buy the Home Services division will probably layoff half or more of the techs. Companies don't buy employees they buy a name (whose reputation is declining just check the company Facebook page and other complaint boards), equipment, patents/trademarks, and logistical centers just to name a few. The employees are the least of what they want.

It is obviously your call, but your job is not dependent on Sears stores. Home services could easily be sold to another company as well if Sears went out of business. Everyone always talks about how great home services is within the company. And there are still plenty of people, such as myself, who has nothing but good things to say about home services. Dont listen to the negativity.

Take the other job. Do not trust what management tells you. Use your own observations.

i assume it will be spun off in the overall bankruptcy or offers for it will be listened to by the court appointed liquidator. The longer the decline of sears the more damage is done to the home services division which is probably profitable as an entity but losing credibility fast so i am told.
