Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

change in the tenor of coachings, etc.

Has anyone on the sales floor noticed a change in the tenor of coachings? This new program with the videos you're required to view (while trying not to laugh at the juvenile presentation) is going to require SMs to badger you with selling techniques, etc. SMs are require to push this down the throat of even the most seasoned sales professional, in an effort to begin the process of weeding out long standing and higher paid, individuals. Essentially, by targeting the higher paid and longer standing SAs with this program, the process of involuntary exit will begin (find something to fire them on).

Many of you will also be blindsided when you go into your first coaching under this new program as you will be surprised to learn your SM has been compiling a very long list of your perceived sins (such as a lunch that was a couple of minutes too long, a mis-sized rack of clothing, maybe you didn't smile big enough at the nice fellow in your department 4 1/2 weeks ago on a Saturday evening at 9:27 PM). This will be presented to you in the usual manner and gone over with you in detail. You will then be pushed into a discussion of why these things happen and how you're going to change your behavior. The discussion will be framed in such a way that the SM feigns concern for your happiness at work, with no regard for any experience that you've had on the floor and/or reported to management (which you should not do any longer--nothing will change. Do not report things to mgmt. Watch out for you fellow associates and keep quiet at all costs. Reduce the number of things you tell your SM and you'll have a lessened stress level quickly).

SAs, you have been warned. Be very careful of the way you interact with any of your SMs or SSs. Be even more careful of how you react to your VPSM and VPASM when you see them. It is recommended you avoid the VPSM and VPASM if you can. It is becoming apparent to anyone who sees these programs (beyond the store level) that battle lines are being drawn--red badge v. white.

I am a retired sales manager with over 25 years with Macys. What you have described is a carefully planned conversation. This is what having a target on your head looks like. Are you over 50? You have been chosen to be managed out.

Why are you guys looking at these coachings as a bad thing. At any job there is training and thats what this is. Do you open credit? Do you do a great job selling? Are you great in customer service? If you said no to any of these you should be coached

Hmmm... interesting. It really depends on who your manager is. Every manager has a different style. Unfortunate that these are the ways that these managers choose to "coach" you. I preferred to work side by side, make observations, make mistakes, celebrate successes, have fun, and talk about life with team members. We sell stuff (and credit) and talk with customers. How hard is that? I took everyday normal interactions with them and turned them into documented coachings on the iPad. It's not rocket science and only as complicated as you make it (I'm talking to you Managers!) I was coaching my team and half the time they didn't even realize it. I didn't do this allll day or every day... who wants to spend the whole day with their manager (or with their associates)? Besides us managers have an almost impossible set of other responsibilities, and expectations we have to maintain (that's a whole new thread)... Keeping your team relaxed and focused is key. There was a bad egg now and then that had to be leaned on but that was marginal. So associates understand.. Managers are required to document their coaching to the associates once, plus a follow up/ a month. We have to do it, it's not an option. It's not a bad thing if you do it and use it right. It sets the tone for your annual review. (If they decide to continue with reviews) Those coachings are sometimes reviewed with the VPSM on the progress of the teams/departments (and Managers) productivity. It's meant for the manager and VPSM to collaborate on what the best way to coach the associate to stay at a high productive level. It also keeps the Manager accountable. The videos are being pushed becasuse no one has been using them much and the company wants the managers to utilize them. They went to all of the trouble to make them after all! lol... They can be bad, but, for some, they can actually inspire ideas on how to approach a situation. There is nothing sinister to them. To end my rant... I apologize for all of those Managers out there that treat you like employees instead of partners. Because that's what you really are. Im no better than you. I have the same goals... I can't succeed without you. - Macys Manager

Whoa...hang on. I have a coaching last night. This exact thing happened. My manager is going on vacation and wanted to "catch up" before she left. So she waited until a few minutes were left in my shift and asked me to come in. She then starts showing the videos and discussing them with me. But after that, the real talk started up. I got told she stays up at night worrying about me (yeah right) and why I look so miserable and unhappy. But then she starts listing all the times I had a clocking error (4 since February 1) and told me its time clock fraud--even if i report it to her when i forget to punch in or hand her a clocking correction for a missed punch. She accused me of stealing time by leaving early and lying about it (something against my values--never done it.). She todl me I have to do better communicating with others (apparently one person nearby didnt know when i went to lunch today).

She wanted me to detail an "action plan" as to how I was going to get better or they'd have to take the next step with a write up. I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING.

Im not even one of the big money heavey hitters. Guess someone doesnt liek me. I'll ask around to others i like.

I'm in New England store.
