Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Once LRed as an employee how soon one can join Cisco again as a contractor?

Is there a cooling period?

Well, my manager wanted to hire me back immediately because he think instead of been LR'd, I should join other project which I left few years ago.

Just he can't hire me back as full time but got approval for a 3 month contractor. Well I didn't take it as I already got a job offer and started the next working day after LR. Anyway I think no cooling time for contractor.

Then I heard another LR came and new may come. I will re-join Cisco if possible when I decide I want to retire.

I was laid off in the annual cull of '13, and as I recall, the severance papers did say something about not coming back for six months. But after 4-5 months, I was contacted about contracting for them, and nobody gave a sh-- (knew or cared) about the six months.

As to the why... why not? They gave me $150ooo/yr to mostly do what I was already doing: sit around, watch tv, and scratch my a--. And as someone pointed out on a different thread, anyone that can leave Cisco has already left Cisco, so eventually I got add'l contracting work with competent people at intelligently managed firms--and continued to draw that check from Cisco. I only ever took what they offered (steady cash) and I did everything they asked of me (very little). If that's a lobotomy, I'll have two. Please and thank you.

6 months.....and joining back as a contractor "does not" impact your severence. And the "in lieu" pay and severence are taxed fully as pay from day 1.

People who like to be deadwood would like to re-join.. who else?

The incompetent who cause far more damage than deadwood. By definition none of you know you are in this category. Many of you are in this category.

6months without VP approval and it will affect your severance package. Same rule for rehire.

A serious answer. Unless Cisco has some arcane rule, they can take you back as a red badge the day after LR (I've seen it done elsewhere).

However, there will likely be tax implications for you. It depends where you are in the world but, generally, if you receive a tax-free payout and go back to the same company within the period that the payout covers, you will become liable for tax on that payout. So, practically, if Cisco pays out one month lieu-of-notice and the equivalent of three-months pay, you don't want to rejoin for at least four months.

There will have to be some change, in theory you cannot go back into the exact same role.

Why in the heck would you want to re-join??? Thank them for LR'ing you! Trust me, there is life outside of Cisco - and it's pretty damn good!!!
