Too much over riding

Another thing that seriously hurt us was the excessive over riding of coupons that upper management was ordering us to do in order to "keep the guest happy and coming". It was no longer just a courtesy, but an entitlement in the eyes of the customer. And it brought in the same entitled customers over and over again to do as many as 10 transactions demanding those over rides. That is a huge part of what has eaten away at our profits. Because specials and doorbusters are priced to the minimum needed in order to gain a decent profit! This over ride culture has be going on for well over 2 years, which totally correlates to the huge downfall I have witnessed in my 5 years with this company. When you over ride $10 and $20 coupons, you now have to bring in 5 more transactions for every 10, just to make the same dollar amount in sales while whiling out the profit on tbose items. So, you are loosing $ while they walk out with an almost free item! (And I'm talking over rides on things that are marked down to $7.99!

Now, during this past sale, I guess they were testing a more aggressive pricing strategy and not giving in on coupons! Long behold, our entire team/store had amazing results and the customers understood when you explained it correctly! Not one customer walked away without their purchases! So the same people will buy if you enforce the rules clearly stated on the coupons! I keep hearing online online online. The online customers don't get overrides. So that's not what will keep people shopping. We have to have the product and the staff to serve them. And we have to follow the coupon rules to make a profit on the items we are selling! Not that difficult! I would love to see the profit for those 3 days during the last sale! Must have been amazing!

official disclaimer I just retired with over 30 years at the store level, executive for over 20 years. The current Macy's business model is simply not sustainable. In the pretense of wanting to make the customer happy, we have been "giving away the store" for years. Coupons.....return policy, which is a free rental service for all......I was instructed by my boss, the VPSM, to take back Macy's merchandise that was clearly purchased at a thrift store. Another time, I was instructed by my VPSM to take back a set of $700 All Clad by a guy who announced he had just gotten out of prison.....we give these "customers" a gift card that they take to the grocery store and exchange for cash in a machine....I got out just in time.....took my $$$$and ran!!
