Here's How Home Depot Is Trying to Destroy Dying Sears

While Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD) CEO Eddie Lampert is busy railing on his vendors in blog posts, Home Depot (HD) is preparing to thieve even more of the retailer's once lucrative tools and appliances sales.

"We have an appliance retailer that recently announced store closings, basically going out of business, and we're seeing sales coming our way in an environment where they're liquidating the stores," Tome said, hinting at the impact of HHGregg's bankruptcy. "It's very interesting." In an interview with TheStreet, Tome explained $5 billion in sales -- mostly in tools and appliances -- could be up for grabs for Home Depot should Sears also go under like HHGregg.

Sears, along with a litany of other issues including that its same-store sales plunged 11.9% since the start of the year, has lost a ton of market share in its key appliances business. To preserve cash, the company has cut inventory in appliances which has only made the impact of store closures worse.

In 2015, Sears' market share in appliances fell to 19%, pushing it to number three on TWICE Magazine market research partner The Stevenson Company's list of the top 50 appliance retailers, just under Home Depot. In 2014, the retailer managed to retain the number two spot, below Lowe's (LOW) which pushed struggling Sears out of the top slot three years ago. At one time, Sears had a 40% share of the appliance industry.

Twice senior editor Alan Wolf said Stevenson's 2016 data on appliance sales will be released on June 5, but predicted that the results will likely not be pretty for Sears.

"Based on successive same-store sales declines in appliances in Sears Holdings' quarterly earnings reports, and round after round of store closures, I don't think it's a stretch to project that Sears' namesake retail chain will show another sales decrease for calendar year 2016," Wolf said in an email to TheStreet.

If you look at Sears Facebook page, you will see most of the complaints are about appliances. More specifically, the delivery and service of said appliances. But once a customer has a bad experience with our service team or delivery team, which is (at out store, at least) probably about 40% of the time, they sour on Sears altogether...

Any warranties will be void in a matter of months no reason to buy from Sears. And yes Kenmore is nothing like it used to be decades ago.

rae - They are not high paying jobs it won't have a major impact. In fact many people who are let go from Sears will probably end up earning more at their next job.

Hmm....I love my Kenmore and Kenmore Elite appliances. My washer/dryer is made by LG under the Kenmore Elite brand. I don't think LG makes bad products, so therefore as my Kenmore Elite washer/dryer are made by LG, I think they are good products. And they are. It is a shame there are so many upset folks out there. If something happens to Sears, it will be a ripple effect that will hurt many many towns and also many many companies, so not good for anyone to be celebrating that.

Kenmore brand is more worthless than Craftsman. Its been synonymous with cheap and poor service since the 80's. Why would someone pay money for it, especially when it will be up for auction very soon anyway.

There was plenty of talk around Hoffman of Sears eventually selling the Kenmore brand. All they really have left was Craftsman, Die-Hard and Kenmore brand recognition. Craftsman was probably the best of the bunch and that ultimately got sold for a pittance.

Sears appliance market share is plummeting. If that's the strong line...well, we all know what's about to happen anyway, just don't know exactly when.

HD, JCP, Lowes, BB, etc.. don't need to try that hard - Sears is self-inflicting its own wounds

The only strong line Sears has is Appliances if they lose that its pretty much over company will come bankrupt immediately. In my store HA is the only thing that keeps it running you see the numbers the sales, but if that ends its just game over for Sears.
