Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

I feel like I've been offered a golden lifeboat

I got LR'd today from SP test. I'm pushing 50 but not there yet. I'm not sure of the scale yet. I've been with cisco for a long time and I've worked from home for the last several years which I consider a huge blessing.

I don't know if it was my age or the fact that I work remotely from my team that put my name on the list. I'm a solid performer, worked on new products....CCIE, know my $h1t so it wasn't a performance based decision.

Although I'm nervous for the future (replacing my income, no longer WFH...), I soft of feel like cisco is a sinking ship and I've been offered a golden lifeboat. It just bugs me that we were asked to work Sunday's the last 10 weeks leading up to this, they knew what was going to happen.

I stopped working weekends and working past 5pm when they no longer gave me RSU/options. I'm no longer owner in company, its just a job. When they ask me to do something beyond 8-5pm, I say show me the RSUs, then they go quiet.

If what is being said has some bases in fact about using "layoffs" as a pretense for replacing older workers with younger ones, then this appears to be a strong case for an age discrimination EEOC action. My words may not be more than just "venting" food for thought for those of you who lost your jobs, but it might help to have something else to consider other than the bad pill you all just swallowed. Also, consider the culture of that place just revealed itself as one which is at best unhealthy & not worthy of your talents. Best of futures to you all.

I guess both, first, you are almost 50, you must go to work early and leave as late as possible, but you don't care of this and be put into the list by youslef.

I quit a couple of years ago when they shorted me on my bonus. I found out that just about everyone I knew older than 43 received less than the target, and the younger people received target or above. They have been laying off Baby Boomers and Gen Xers for years, but kicked that into overdrive after I left.

The executives generally don't really understand technology or respect technical people. People who do well there usually are those who single-mindedly focus on advancing their own careers without any thought for other employees or the company's advancement.

Cisco tries to be what they perceive Google or Facebook are by hiring a bunch of young people out of college. Once they are in the door, however, any innovative ideas or solutions will be stolen or quashed. I doubt many of them will stay too long.

You are intelligent (CCIE!) and have a great work ethic (working Sundays for the greater good.) You will land on your feet...I hope at a place with WFH.

I wish you all the best.

Stay relevant. Move up the stack, networking will be a feature not a business. Learn full stack engineering lien aclud architect at AWS or Google would be expected to know, or how tonwxrip that, as AI and automation will replace you in 5 years. Always stay ahead of the field. CCIE isn't a lifetime cert like MD.
