Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

No parties, no celebrations!

A peer of mine, director level, made it to 68 years old at Cisco having worked there the final 10 years of his career. His boss, a newly hired dip$hit, eliminated his job. Obvious move seeing that my peer was an "old white guy." Anyway, I asked at staff meeting what we were going to do to celebrate his "retirement."

Guidance from Cisco HR was "no parties, no celebrations, just send him away."

WHAT A GREAT place to work! Chuckles better look out -- he's an over 50 white guy himself. When are they coming for him??

@Nmb7gdO-lqi You need to get a check on reality. NO ONE is safe at Cisco .. I've seen several Female Engineers and Engineer managers get laid off at Cisco. Cisco talks a good talk... but wait a minute.. are you a millennial? Then yes, you may be safe.. but once you hit 35... start looking for new job - your days are numbered.

An almost 70-year-old man who now will have no job, house, or insurance despite his hard work for Cisco the last 10 years is lucky in your mind. Not everyone can afford to retire at 65 years old. What a way to treat hard-working seniors, they should be ashamed of themselves.

Cisco used to be a great place to work. The company seems to have layoffs about half a year now, if the trend continues. I watched as it became a trend to layoff born-inAmerica citizens, after some of them started taking the one year package, it just became normal to get rid of more Americans every year.

Another thing about Cisco demographics that has changed, at the same time this was happening another trend was happening. They started hiring H1B about 2 or 3 for every American citizen that they let go.

Also it is really sad that there are hardly any black people or hispanic/latino people. Mostly Indian people, few Asian people and even less white people.

A Cisco manager told that some recruiters used to give the managers a kickback (for hiring H1B) and a lot of the managers were hiring up to 10 to 15 people reporting to each manager (who was also H1B converted to citizen), from their village.

Maybe it's just the new Cisco. Look elsewhere for work if you are an American born citizen.

@hvd - there is a ton of European women in Marketing

Smart & ambitious women do not meet the Cisco culture. I've watched countless women be pushed out that do not fit the mold of what a woman is supposed to be at Cisco.

  • Attractive women that are great at building relationships (no skills)

  • Obnoxious storytellers that spend the day self-promoting herself (no skills)

Are you kidding? If we get one resume from a female Nepalese goat milkmaid, she's in. The thing that the media and activists all get head up about is middle class white women. We have plenty of women from south and east Asia, but very few caucasian women (and almost as few white men). In fact, in my extended group of about 20 people, the only caucasians are remote workers or the European H1B imports. There are no US born males. But on the other hand, I found a marketing group the other day, full of VP's and directors (all high powered jobs) and 85% of them were caucusian women.

Female engineer here. It's great to be a woman at Cisco, there's no way I could be LR'd as I help keep the balance. There's so much pressure right in the media with Google/FB/Apple etc to hire, promote and retain more women. Sure I've got to deal with harassment in the workplace, but I get a raise every year. My husband loves it.

I think perhaps the reason that a lot of 50+ white males are being mentioned is because Cisco is also a very male dominated company. How many women work in the technical and customer facing or management roles? I can say from personal experience that the company is not discriminating against men and keeping the women.

I've seen plenty of parties. Especially the ones aimed at the survivors of an LR. Gotta keep their morale up. After the September and January LRs, there were plenty of them. Mgmt doesn't want to LR a bunch of people and then have the survivors voluntarily leave. Though that's what ends up happening.

Wow....if he made it to 68, he should be estatic.....and should be retired anyway. Seriously.....68 and a Dir....he should have plenty of money. I never saw anyone remotely close to 68 while I worked there. 50s....sure.

"No parties, no celebrations!" makes sense as many are losing jobs right now
