Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Used Oracle Apex for Web Development and Now Laid Off. Is there a job market for this skill?

Hi,

I don't want to complain, I am just glad for the good things I got over the years. The thing is we are a PL/SQL shop and the tech lead chose the PL/SQL web frameworks (PL/SQL pages, Apex and Oracle Servlets) instead of (Java Server Pages and Java Servlets). Apex is awesome cool as I don't have to code as much but feel I don't know Java (which is now old) or Javascript. Is there a market for Oracle Apex or PL/SQL for the web? I haven't got any offers because my skills are not the same as others into the new frameworks. If not I am really considering going to go back to online school to learn new skills. Please no mean comments about anything, just need advice. Thanks.

Create your own market. Freelance. Oracle is ignoring the less profitable on prem customers while they pivot to cloud. Use your skills to actually help these unfortunate souls while using time to pick up some valuable experience, like AWS or Hadoop or Python.

Sorry but be real, who need APEX ? How much money Oracle actually make from APEX ? If a product company can't make enough profit on, whoever developing and supporting it are disposable. So, leave this platform ASAP. Your core skills will still be valuable just not APEX. Always pick to invest in a career where the skill in demand and for a longer period of time. PL/SQL is still in demand as database developer, database warehouse and ETL. If you are going to pick up a new scripting/programming language, you might want to consider Python. Going back to school isn't going to be difficult. You may want to consider Coursera. Look at the job market as a picture and gear your skill towards that. Look around what companies are looking for and the type of skills and stay on top of it. If your current job isn't preparing you for it, leave. Good luck. Keep an open mind and willingness to learn new technology. Though, knowing people is very important. Sometimes, it is not what you know but who you know.

From one friend to another, don't go back to school. That is putting good money towards bad.

Learn the new skills and frameworks good enough to pass any coding tests, update your resume with said skills, go into an interview and be very positive and future forward looking

There is a need but it's very niche. Opportunities are few and far between. Your SQL skills could translate. Java and JavaScript is still in high demand.
