Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

Tuition Assistance is a SCAM! We are paid in education!

Ok soooooo this is what I've learned!

Tuition assistance program isn't Assistance at all! In fact, we are charged imputed income tuition grant is a made up term. I am working with a tax lawyer now to take this company down on the fraud and negligence! Legally, if a company provides an assistant scholarship or grant, there are no tax implications! What at your thoughts? Also, my 1098-t form is wrong and fraud. It has put me under investigation with the IRS to which I owe almost $5000! EDMC is getting two tax breaks by submitting fake documents to the IRS which state that they are providing their employees with scholarships and or grants, while in reality they are paying us in education dollars, where we are actually paying for it as "imputed income." EDMC you can't f---ing have a double dip, it's either one or the other! Is it a scholarship or income? Check your tax forms asap and take this company down!!!!

It is not an EDMC rule, it is a federal IRS rule. If you are taking master level courses and above, that are not required for your job, you must pay taxes as imputed income on all amounts above $5,250 in the year.

If your accountant at Liberty tax service never heard of this then you are an idiot in need of a new accountant . This is also spelled out in the tuition assistance program. I completed 4 1/2 masters programs during my time with EDMC and paid the taxes owed. The 1098t was accurate each time. If you are being audited for this, then you probably tried to fudge your return.

I would love to join a class action. My tax accountant just shook his head and said I never heard of that one before. It inflated my income so much. I left in Feb of 2016 and they had my imputed income over 11,000 because they said they had to include from Aug of 2015 on. Bull and I don't see how it's legal. They are double dipping!

dpg, really? Is it so out of the scope of reality that this company would be engaging in unlawful practices? It is paying at least one whopping settlement we're aware of. Who knows how many more there have been.

The people on this site are the WORST. Just goes to show that if stay employed there you are stupid. Just get a new job and stop threatening to sue regarding matters you clearly do not understand. Take some responsibility and get a new job, GET A NEW JOB!

Traditionally you are responsible for taxes above the $5200 level (not sure the exact amount, but this is close enough) anything above that is taxed as ordinary income.

Is that your reference? I've had no tax implications whatsoever from my covered classes.

Yes they have been getting away with this for so long. I hope someone is ready to take them down and we get reimbursed for this b---s---.
