Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Would you recommend. Sears corporate as a good place to work?

It's looking I will get a job there but I'm not so sure after reading this forum. What do you think? Thank you

@3bze I am sorry, but I thought you said you worked at corporate for a year. I can only speak to my immediate department. I didn't feel like I was attacking you, but I understand how words can come across as harsh. I too have felt attacked by many of the responses to what I say. What's TCS?

@3hup Funny....but no I am the furthest thing from a corporate shill. I fully acknowledge the company should pay store associates more. Of course what I say doesn't go very far as I don't have any influence over others which is why it is so funny when you call me a "shill." I have had a good career at Sears....nothing to be upset about other than all the stories of how bad it is in the stores that makes me sad. So I say my "peace" to whoever I can at corporate, but I have no influence over anyone to change things.

I've been around more than long enough to know a bad working environment when I have to work in one. My immediate team was mostly fine. I heard and saw managers in other departments use the most abusive language I've ever heard to their employees and then about their employees to other managers after-the-fact. Things that would have gotten managers at other companies I've worked for tossed out on their a--.

That aside, who said I was expecting a raise within a year? I sure didn't. I'm no rookie in the job market, either. I was fully willing to work and deal with whatever craziness the Sears environment had in store for me, for what could have been a really decent job. My reports of raises (or lack thereof) were truthful reports from others in the dept. Maybe you should read my comment fully before attacking.

I was part of the February purge, and I've heard of a lot more people in the various IT departments either being made to train TCS folks to do their jobs, being laid off since, or simply leaving of their own accord. If SHC was really interested in keeping good people, they'd stop the brain-drain from happening at Hoffman.

Oh my! Who would give you grief for working anywhere? That really is kind of nasty. Here is what I have found. You can be paid incredibly well if you just strategically plan your career. There are raises at Sears corporate. You just have to be promoted and take on additional work. To the person who only worked here a year....you weren't going to get a raise in less than a year. You pretty much have to work in your job at least a year at corporate and then you have the ability to post for another job to get a promotion.

As far as a toxic environment, it just depends on your manager. Some are awful and some are good...just like anywhere.

I really feel like I understand the stores are a tough environment right now but for the corporate associates who are complaining, come on. You have a good thing going......We need to give more to the store associates. I get where they are coming from but anyone in corporate...I mean honestly. I am on call on the weekends and yet I don't complain.

Corporate is not a bad environment at all. In the sense that our company is going through a REALLY tough time right now, yes that is difficult. But most have a normal schedule at least in our department and don't have to work on the weekends other than to occasionally pull a few reports on Sunday.

But back to pulling down the mirrors in your house.....well FUNNY but anyone who is that ashamed to work someplace really shouldn't be doing it.

I worked at corporate for a year. Was promised good raises and bonuses during the hiring process, but learned later those were outright lies, and people in my dept had gone several years with nominal or no raises - and definitely no bonuses beyond gift cards. I did get a decent bump in my salary when I moved there, so there was that. Plus I had a new 'baseline' salary to start any salary discussions on when I did get laid off in the February purge.

Sears corporate has its perks (not many) but more than a few downsides. A hostile and toxic environment among some of the managers being primary in my mind. Don't expect to be treated 'well'. If you can use the job as a stepping stone to get some experience, go for it. But don't count on it as a career or as a long-term growth opportunity.

I would only take it if it were the only job available and this was the only way I could feed my family. Other than that I would be running away from the hiring office as quickly as possible. I've caught so much grief from my friends for working at Sears.

I suggest you that you either: 1. Become Unemployed. 2. If you are Unemployed, stay that way.

Unemployment will allow you to be happy, appreciated, and have a better image in front of your loved ones and friends.

If you become a Sears employee ........ well, remove the mirrors from your house and change your legal name.

Funny. The bad thing about this forum now is that it is beginning to sound like the Jerry Springer show so the good folks in the stores who are posting valid concerns are being overtaken by those who think their sarcasm will help and unfortunately it never does.

Yes I recommend you work for Sears. Here's what you do... You ask for a high salary as well as a sign on bonus. You take the 4 week training course on how to blame others for your mistakes. Then take the 4 week media bashing training course. After that you take the other 4 week training course on corporate shilling. 4 more weeks of training on shop your way and what it could for the company. 4 weeks of training on something they will not utilize 2 weeks after you've learned the process. And finally 4 weeks of training on inspiring employees to work harder,while the board continue to drain the company... After you've completed 6 months of training,now it's 6 months on the job... After you complete 1 year you jump ship like the last 6 C.F.O.'s and anybody else that spent 1 year or less with Sears. There you have it. Good luck with your future endeavor here at Sears

I say it's fine as long as you have a backup plan. If I were in your position I'd assume my job was temporary. That said, I don't think it would be a negative thing as far as your resume goes.....although staying till the end may be negative. By that point everyone who lost their jobs will be going for the same positions you are. Especially within that general area.

If you're smart about(and lucky) it you may be able to spin the situation for your personal gain.

"Negative crowd," lol. Nice. No. The disillusionment just isn't there for most of is who work in the actual stores. From what I have gathered, working at corporate isn't so bad. But corporate employees are largely insulated from the customers who are increasingly angry about the changes corporate executives force onto the stores. (The massive cuts to store associates that results in not enough employees to assist customers...the return policy that we get complaints on 20 times a day...etc...) If you do decide to work there, try to remember that the work environment in the stores is NOTHING like it is at corporate. It's a lot easier to stay positive when every other person you encounter isn't asking you when Sears will be closing for good. Don't be another corporate employee who is completely out of touch with the reality that your job at corporate will cease to exist if the stores continue to be neglected.

No. This board attracts people that have be through the wringers with this company and are trying to advise others what we have been through. I had 38yrs to the month with this company and received a 4hr notice via conference call that my job had been eliminated. I had always had good reviews, no raise for the last 8yrs and yet I stuck it out with them. Save your time and find yourself a good job. As posted here and other places Eddie is blaming everyone but himself for the failure of Sears and Kmart. There used to be 10 Kmarts within a 10 mile radius of my city (a major metropolitan) and today there are none . The closest one is 50 miles away. We have 3 Sears stores and 2 could be closed any time.

In general HE is a good environment depending on your manager. Salaries are fair. Yes, it probably isnt the best time to join, but it depends on your current situation and the other job offers you have and if you want to stay in the Chicagoland area.

It depends on your role and team/business unit you will work for. You should also consider your goals and a risk factor as the company is in active stage of the transformation. I think in two years the company will look very different from what it is right now.

The HQ in general is a very good place to work. I like the amenities HE location offers and the flexibility we get. I would suggest asking for a high base salary to offset the low quality of benefits we get. Also consider requesting a sign-on bonus to limit your risks.

Be careful with where you get the info about SHC. This discussion board mostly attracts a negative crowd.

Ask for a sky high salary. You will never get a raise, and you benefits will be crap. Plus, you need as much money to live on as you can, when you lose your job when the house of cards falls.
