Salesforce is #1

The 10 best San Francisco Bay Area companies to work for: SFDC is numero uno; oracle not on the list - no surprise there.

Salesforce is the NEW Oracle. Keith Block, who headed ORCL'S NA Sales, is now Pres. of SFDC.

ORCL is now a fragmented company with so many silos/acquisitions that nobody know who does what. They put folks from the acquired companies to lead organizations without understanding how things are done at ORCL.

Nearly all the seasoned vets are now gone.

ORCL used to be a proud company to work for. Not anymore. That torch has been handed to SFDC.

"They were smart. And you are here now because you didn't look out for #1."

Not really. I'll be more descriptive to explain why.

The "me first" attitude I referenced meant that they were some of the most egotistical, controlling, uncaring, unethical and manipulative people I've had the misfortune to come across. Customers wanted/needed Oracle software for one thing or another and ended up tolerating these people. These people were short-sighted and looked for ways to screw over the customer in order to bring in immediate revenue. It's exactly the type of attitude that is present at the top and it has established a pervasive culture within Oracle. Customers have taken note and are increasingly avoiding dealing with Oracle, so Oracle is having to cut costs in order to prop up the profit margin and stock price. These people are seeing the impact on their own income and/or career, so they could be considered "smart" for leaving to a different company that has a better reputation and is experiencing growth. However, they aren't intelligent enough to see that they are part of the issue and are bringing it with them to their new job.

As for me, I haven't left yet because I'm being very selective about where I'll go. Despite their #1 rating of Bay Area companies to work for, SFDC isn't a company I'd consider due to the culture that flows down from the top along with the presence of a lot of people I have zero respect for. Even though it holds a #1 spot in Cloud, it is an excellent place to learn and it freely offers resources to get the job done to its employees, I'm avoiding Amazon as the stress, churn and disrespect of employees there is well known. IBM? Just look at which company tops the list on this website. No company is perfect, but I'm avoiding the urge to just settle for some place else that is only marginally better than Oracle. It definitely is not an easy task, but I've been encouraged by a few opportunities I've seen so far that this isn't an impossible task.

100K here and 100k there and after they've laid of almost 15,000 people since 6/1 2016, it adds up to tidy bonus for MH and SC of some $30M+ each. With oracle it's all about the money all the time

Even analyzing from that angle it doesn't make sense. I was only making slightly over $100k. So even for the most greedy capitalistic point of view it seems they would have been better off with me and most likely most others RIF-ed for no good reason - or am I missing something? Regardless after this experience I have been very soured - and I can compare this throughout my entire career never have been treated like this ever, ever, ever.

No merely greedy, welcome to predatory capitalism as practiced by LE, MH, and SC

This is sad but must be true - loyalty has been lost. I have been thrown for a loop being RIF-ed for no good or sane reason. After analyzing this from every angle possible these actions can only be classified as tyrannical.

Of the many Oracle employees that I've known who have left for SFDC over the past couple of years, I was happy to see each and every one leave as they embodied the culture of "me first".

They were smart.

And you are here now because you didn't look out for #1.

Loyalty to a company nowadays gets you nothing.

Always put your self first.

During the boom years for Oracle's database and applications, I bet it was rated in the top 10. Paying well, offering bonuses, having great benefits and giving out a variety of perks gains a lot of approval. Money can smooth over many faults. However, at its core, Oracle's culture has flowed down from the very top and that has long been driven by narcissism and power. That translates into not caring about customers, encouraging internal factions to battle against one another, etc. Customers were fed up with Oracle's practices a long time ago, but now have increasing options that weren't there before and are voting with their pocketbook. The lack of growth means that there is no longer money to cover the core issues of the company and the rating it is getting is appropriate.

I wouldn't read too deeply into SFDC being #1. SFDC had the vision with its "No Software" push to see the future that SaaS would bring, has a good product and, therefore, has been experiencing success. It has the money to make itself attractive. But it isn't too different from Oracle of years past as it has its own egomaniac at the helm and drives employees through micromanagement. People simply like the perks. Of the many Oracle employees that I've known who have left for SFDC over the past couple of years, I was happy to see each and every one leave as they embodied the culture of "me first".

Finding a company with good people, excellent leadership and a strong culture can be a difficult thing to find.
