Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Optum/UHG laying off 1000’s of US Citizens on one hand while Applying/Renewing H1B/L1b Visas for foreign workers

I am so disgusted and humiliated to see how we are getting thrown out like used paper towels while Optum is applying and renewing H1B visas by telling labor department that they have a shortage of workers. Really?? are you kidding me??? Break rooms and copier areas are filled with notices for H1B employees. Ever wonder that you are the most qualified candidate for a job but got rejected? I am sure that many jobs are opened just to sponsor or extend H1B visa, they are closed by saying no qualified US worker found.

Just like Disney, Optum is also abusing the H1B visas to replace US workers, the only difference is that we are giving Optum free hand. Please if you are recently laid off or if you see that your colleagues and friends are let go while H1B’s and L1B’s are kept in your department then report this abuse to labor department REPORTH1BABUSE@USCIS.DHS.GOV. Please also reach out to your local senators and newspapers, today we are getting laid off, tomorrow it can be you. As a responsible citizen it is our duty to report the activities which are negatively affecting U.S. workers. It might help to reduce the future layoffs of US Citizens.

In addition, Optum is well known for H1B fraud. They have a corporate legal department to help people skirt immigration laws. This company is founded on fraudulence and illegal schemes of all sorts are actively encouraged.

This happens everywhere. If companies can find cheaper resource they will go for that since to them this is just a plain business move that benefits their bottom line nothing personal.

Yep, I was laid off last year and finally found another job. I searched the ole UHG website and found and applied for my old job. I didn't get it because I have self respect now and didn't fall for their low wages and abuse. They know that I know what they are up to.

United has employees in Bangalore and efforts are underway to shift work to these employees. The billable rate is lower for those employees than for US based employees.

I was let go from Optum recently. Our team consisted of 8 peons. The 2 Americans were let go and the 6 offshore workers were kept.

It is not everyone getting laid off. It is mainly older U.S. workers. I did not vote for Trump. An American company should employ American workers. Period.

I work at Optum tech and have worked in tech at many companies. The whole main building for Optum tech is filled with H1B employees. I don't care either way, but to say it's not happening there is false. Optum also has the goal to offshore 4 out of 5 tech employees and is almost at that goal per one of the townhalls. They plan to do more with a new cost structure rollout. They're upfront about it. It's not a secret.

I totally get why folks hate #H1B resources (import of foreign labor while people are unemployed here in the States) - but this was never the issue at UHC, never. The number are not there to justify this level of frustration, and on top of everything they do get chopped just like everyone else.

Now, go to HP or Dell or some other IT shops around (e.g., Utility companies) you will see departments flooded with H1Bs, as an American you almost have no chance of being hired as you are simply not able to do senior developer work for $60K - I can TOTALLY understand folks who get pissed in situations like this.

You're taking your frustrations out on the wrong people. The layoffs affect everyone, not just US employees. Just last week a bunch of H1B people in my office got chopped in fact, so your rant is plain wrong.
