Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Cashiers told NOT to ask for SYW Rewards phone numbers and/or email

So this is what I was told at my Kmart but cashiers have been given a mandate to not ask for customers numbers or email address for their SYW rewards anymore. Of course if they ask if they can do it, we'll still honor it but it seems that they want to discourage members using it since it perhaps is costing extra money they could get without the program.

Of course the BS answer is that they don't want others perhaps using other people's points but come on...think we all know the real truth don't we?

Maybe, they are referring to the games you can play daily to win points. They used to give out large dollar mounts fairly often so it was easy to get free stuff. I suppose it was possible for people to have multiple accounts. They have tapered off so they are only giving away $5-10 per person a week so you have to live close to a Sears/Kmart to make it worth your while.

Wow. This is like the game "telephone." Info is getting completely turned around and upside down. This is what happens when everyone is so nervous. I know i will get blasted for saying this, but life really does work in your favor if you maintain a positive attitude and work hard. I know, I know some very good people were laid off, but they will find something else as long as they remain positive and according to a lot of you will be happier than working at Sears. Others can sense when you are negative, and they want nothing to do with you. So just go to work and work as you normally would.

You never know who you might run into at work that might offer you a job at another company if they like your personality. Just make contacts everywhere you go and then if something happens, you will be able to reach out to people for help.

Don't get so "hung up" on everything. It's a paycheck...just do your best or the best you think you should do based on what you are getting paid. (I know I hear that all the time on these posts.)

tlb--Totally true. If you take uber a couple of times a week and patronize participating restaurants, bars, etc. that are SYW partners, it doesn't take long for the points to add up.

This was the direction given from upper management (not sure how this got turned into do not ask members for their phone number or email):

"Just a little reminder to all about the power of Membership. Our SYWR program is one of the fastest growing loyalty programs in the industry because we regularly provide rewards in the form of points. Those points are the PRIMARY marketing tool that we have at our disposal. When a cashier asks a member if they want to redeem points, that tool is gone, we can no longer use those points to attract that member back for another trip. Its great to see a member reap the benefits of membership, but please let them make that decision on their own."

They simply want you not to ask the member to redeem the points. That way we can send them marketing to lure them back into the store for another visit to use the points and spend more cash.

If your manager actually told the cashiers not to ask for phone number or email, they will get their @$$ ripped when your SYWR penetration rate falls through the floor.

Not entirely sure how one can defraud the SYW program unless you are an associate stealing member account info.

All point accumulations come from transactions where the member spent money. Even if you factor in surprise points -- which the company has complete control over doling out -- the member has or is still spending money with us.

We have a couple people who are heavy users of points in our store. I've had to look up their accounts and see the points posting on their accounts. They are shopping with us, using coupons of course or other promotional offers like the extra points with a Sears Card. They are also using SYW promos, with Uber, rewards partners, other stores online.

There are multiple analysts who have called the accusation of fraud in the system complete hogwash. The system was set up so that a maximum discount on all the purchases averaged does not go into negative margin. You do know we sell a ton of things that have incredible margins. You can see this in the RMU as an associate at Kmart.

So for everyone who thinks we are giving away the company when a member gets a shocking discount on their purchase using points, think again. The member essentially paid for those points with prior purchases.

SYW cards were only handed out during the first few years. The expense was too much.

Now to get your number and have a card you have to print it from the SYW website and laminate the paper if you want some sort of card.

Not asking about using points is a way for the company to make a little more money. This is the end of the quarter so every little bit on the bottom line helps. I think they did this same thing last year at the end of the second quarter also.

Got it. Well we all are different. You could always take a picture too of your number with the PIN on it and have it on your phone too.

why is it so hard to carry your SYW card?

Some of us don't carry a handbag with a lot of useless junk in it

Maybe because 95% of SYW members don't have a card, since they were only handing out physical cards in the very early stages of the program.

What I don't understand is why is it so hard to carry your SYW card? I carry a Costco card with me in my handbag and a SYW card along of course with multiple other cards.

Now if only they'd actually DONE anything about the countless members basically defrauding the SYW system in so many ways for the past few years, maybe they'd have actually managed to save a significant amount of money.

They don't want you to ask customers if they want to use their points, it impacts margin and in turn lowers profit, and also slows down the line, because lets face it no one remembers that dang pin!

Is this only Kmart stores? I remember their was a time where they were telling cashier to not ask about members points maybe they will enforce it again so they dont have to redeem customers points.

WHAT??? Hell has officially froze if Kmart (Sears) wants us to stop asking customers, I mean members, if they want to sign up for SYW or get credit for their purchase through SYW.

We're still asking away at Sears. Maybe we will get an email that tells us to stop.

It's a bit late to realize that Sears and Kmart customers are fed up with the SYW badgering at the registers. I don't think it is because of that though. They can't afford to pay out the points, maybe they will disband SYW since it has failed...too many "members" are getting free or heavily discounted merchandise.

You've been told? Another person, who is not in management or even working at Kmart. Gotta love these false stories.

Rewards programs and gift cards are the first things to go right before a company folds since they aren't a consideration during bankruptcy court.

ask = harassment

don't ask = scamming customers / saving pennies

What should we do genius? Do not ask, ask and ask again? Will it make you happy? Some people just are inventing a reason to complain...
