Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Is M9 canceled?

Hearing both types of rumors about M9- canceled and not canceled.

If it were canceled, how do they plan to sell M8? Are they not going to announce it at Open World?

If it is not canceled, what prompted the decision? Will it go on till end of the year or only till September, assuming layoffs are phased till Sep. And what will happen to the accelerator /ASIC chips?

People who have some inside info, please respond. People who are guessing, say that you are. Too many wild rumors flying as it is.

@OA5DyTG-3tam - You're right, I did overlook the 2016 session (just the one, not two, it looks like). My bad.

That makes it even odder that if they're going to announce M8 shortly, they're not talking about it at HC2017. The timing would be perfect.

@OA5DyTG-2kdg throughput-wise the M8 it will kill any other cpu including latest skylake. single-thread is good, better than latest skylake, on-par with fastest p8.

@OA5DyTG-2cex Oracle presented also at HC2016 with a couple of sessions around SWiS, you may have missed them.

M8 is definitely going to hit the shelf, announcement in a month or so, before OOW.

Anybody repeating rumors without insider info and specially any Oracle employees doing so should be fired.

Why would Oracle not announce M8 chip/cpu and HW Systems based on that ?

Development and Testing should be almost done so why not make some money off of it by making minimal investments for support and maintanence ?

It's supposed to be better than x86 for many benchmarks/Apps, isn't it ?

Oracle is done with the hardware business. Period. Full stop. End of discussion.

@OA5DyTG-2cex:

Not a big surprise but they were going to present the M8 chip at Hot Chips and announce the system at Open World. At least that's how they have done it in the past. So this seems to hit at M8 dead as well.

IEEE "Hot Chips" conference is in two weeks and Oracle isn't doing anything there. Last time they presented was in 2015, for Sonoma. I don't know if this counts as a big surprise.

Webcast doesn't look like an announcement, just a demand gen event: "Better Together: Building an Optimized Architecture with Exadata and SuperCluster".

  • Who / Which group (org) is supposed to be doing the hardware webcast on Aug 10th ?

Is that to announce M8 chip/cpu followed by announcement of M8 based HW Systems

at Oracle Open World ?

  • Does anyone know if M8 is on the agenda at Oracle Open World October 1-5 ?

  • If M9 is getting cancelled, it needs to be done in context of business plan for M8 and overall HW/Sparc/Solaris strategy going forward.

Let's get back on the subject please ... no need for judgements .

If anyone have news that can Help others they are welcome to contribute . Other than that there are other platforms to criticize , Facebook is one , you can find many topics / videos / status updates to criticize .

Let's keep the talk on M9 / accelerator standalone project , and if they go hand in hand or there is no need for M9 since the accelerator will be a standalone product .

Easy for you to say. Many well qualified good engineers are forced to stick around because of family issues (newborn child or about to have a child) or immigration issues (h1b transfer takes too long, wait for green card takes 5-10 years for India and China) or even because they are waiting for their patent to go through.

Staying does not imply the engineer is bad or slacking off or out of touch. Stop judging your Co workers.

It's pathetic. Are you basing your carrier hopes on a piece of h/w to be released ? I thought most of the folks are college educated smart professionals, and can make choices. If you feel you have been left out of latest tech development and hence can't find a job, go get 1-2 certificate while you still have a few months left. It's not impossible !

Somebody's got some "Splaining" to do for this mess in the hardware business. No use crying "Fowl"er now, I guess. Good that I got out earlier this year. The outside world is a much better place.

Just a guess, however, writing seems to be on the wall for M9.

M9 cancellation (decision / announcement ?) and repercussions (layoffs, possibly in 4 to 6 weeks ?) after ES/HR is done dealing with ZFSSA layoffs, which are happening today, Thu (3rd Aug) since I guess it's too much to deal with on same day/week, apart from the bad press (PR nightmare) and impact on employee morale.

You don't need 1k people to make accelerators. Question is do you need even one person at all? Are they really trying to save some part of the division or is everything going?

You don't need 1k people at MSs level to do accelerator chips.
