Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Solaris dead, what about ZFS ?

Even press knows that Solaris is dead, as GITHUB is silent for continuous delivery promise. See: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/08/02/oracle_john_fowler_bails/

Interestingly, FS1 will not be sold to external customers. Questions are :

  1. Is ZFS and SA still planned to be kept around ? Out of 4B in h/w revenue last 12 months, half is SPARC, and ZFs is omnipresent on both platforms (x86 and SPARC)

  2. Is SPARC over after M8 ?

Were you one of the people who believed in the mission stated earlier about cloud etc. ?

I believe there is nothing wrong with Cloud centric mission. We should all encourage Oracle making money , so that our division gets some life line.

Can't you see what's happening around us and have you really realized the reason behind that ?

We are loss making unit, extra weight was shed. But we still sell $4b, and support cloud. I think myself and my group will be left alone.

Did you not see what happened with Solaris, even after a huge layoff not far back ?

Solaris and Storage, whatever is left, will continue to support our $4b business. So, I don't anticipate further cuts.

It's considerably easier to layoff a QA person than a developer. Going after them first makes sense. But ask yourself this: if QA has nothing to do, how long do you think it will take for the higher ups to realize it's because the devs have nothing to give them.

What a level of delusion!

Still here ,my friend. No in in my ZFSSA dev was let gone today, that I am aware of. I think k all the layoffs in ZFSSA that had to happen have happened, and now no more. QA was let gone, but they weren't doing anything , so what's the point of having them.

"I think I am going to be safe in ZFSSA for some years"

Don't get too comfortable. Oracle is well known for shooting itself in the foot by laying off people it desperately needs to succeed.

I heard M9 was recently decided to be canceled, but this is not official. I think SPARC is done after T8 and M8.

Is it confirmed that ZFSSA will not be used in Cloud ? I keep hearing rumor that FS1 beat us to it, but I can't believe it. There is no confirmation. And, we literally have over 2k arrays in a small division I am aware of in Cloud, we might have more ZFSSA in other pockets. How in the world will all this data be transferred to something as s---y as FS1 ? I think I am going to be safe in ZFSSA for some years

Many of these - Sparc (especially Linux), ZFS were "supposed" to be continued only for Oracle cloud ( since external revenues are not looking great).

So by your argument they would have survived. But by the looks of it, they won't. Because the cloud promise was just a smokescreen.

No idea what this is about. If it's not cloud, you don't belong to Oracle.
