Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

Why working hard doesn't matter at Lowe's

There is no incentive to work hard - the harder you work, the more work you get. If you're lazy and just cruise around the back aisles for most of your shift and disappear during down stocking, the managers do nothing to you. So why work hard? It used to be if a manager told you to do a job and you ignored them, you got fired. These days there are no consequences to such behavior. And this new policy about call outs where being sick at the doctor or being an hour late for some legit, unexpected reason is the same as not showing up is the stupidest policy I've ever heard of...ever. That tells you all you need to know about Lowe's. We have so many call outs on Sundays when the trucks need unloading that you'd think the plague hit our town. Again, no consequences for being lazy and no incentive to work hard...this is the worst company I've ever experienced. Thank God Amazon has a job fair coming up and is hiring 1000s of people...

Myself and another Stocker were doing all the heavy work for over a year, while the other ones skated bye on a daily basis. Well when you overwork these two there is bound to be problems. Both of us are now on restrictive duties due to shoulder, back injuries along with other problems. We are pushed by our direct supervisor to go beyond our restrictions, and upper management is aware of it. We watch as other employees skate on by every day just walking around and not doing freight and when you don't help you are not a team member. Love my hours, but I'm done with the BS.

Long time employee here. 10+ years. I have seen a lot of changes. One thing I notice the harder you work the more they rely on you. So if you are the type that can do it all. Do installs for all departments. Do R/A's and A/R's. Solve problems drive equipment. Well you are used. They will call you for everything. Guess what you are still worth the same as the girl in installed sales that needs you to drop a roll of carpet for an install going out today because they don't have a license to drive the equipment or you have to drop a pallet of water cause there is no plumbing guy. Now do this day in and day out. How about people in your department that don't zone during the day and leave returns and cleanup for the night shift. The specialist is a girl working in flooring and doesn't want to do the hard work and leaves her messes for you. Management doesn't fix the issues. They just ignore and use the people that can.. They don't realize that is what puts bad attitudes. So because upper management can't fix the problems you have to bend over and take it?? Well I don't do that very well. So yeah I am a problem. I really don't mind helping people when they need it. I have a problem doing their job cause they won't. It's not a one time thing. It's daily. Have fun lazy people. Leaning on the guy who can get it done won't be there much longer.

Damn you two must work at my store!

I come in as a closer and find no one has touched the freight, done the IRP's and the department is a mess because the closer said it was busy. But they still have time to go to another department and talk to their friends for hours.

The only thing hard work gets you is more hard work.

The only thing hard work get's you is punished. There is no reward. I worked for years as a Sales Specialist to earn "leading performer" on my year end review. Finally got it. You know what it meant? Nothing. I got the same percentage of raise as the people who got the lowest rating, barely holding onto their job. There are currently four people in my department. 90% of the work is done by myself and another guy who's been there for 7 years. I'm constantly covering multiple departments and handling all the problems with our customers and install related issues because the other specialist "has trouble talking to people sometimes" or "has anxiety issues". Well get another dang job. Don't just stand around the department all day playing on your phone. The other night I was covering three deparments due to lunch schedules, and on the phone with a customer trying to solve an install issue. Told a customer in the store I'd be with them in a couple minutes. Customer goes to the front, complains that I had been ignoring her for 45 minutes and been on the phone with my friends, etc. I get a write up for not adequately taking care of the customers. "Should have called for help" they said. Four months ago, I paged for help three times, and called my manager twice. No help arrived. Customer goes up complains that I didn't have time to help them and they felt unimportant. Write up. I bust my @$$ in that store, and I'm now on final because I have a track record of "negative customer service". The company is a f-ing joke. I'm trying to get out ASAP, I advise everyone else to as well.

You are regurgitating what I have been screaming for years... hard work gains you NOTHING. It only shows management that you are willing to sacrifice your health and your family time for the good of the company. They have no respect for these people and usually target them for the first round of layoffs. If you want to succeed and retain your sanity, wander around like you own the place. Delegate the hard work to the weak links. Convince management that they are fortunate to have you on board. As you said, the only thing hard work will get you is more hard work.
