Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Is this wave done?

Have there been any additional layoffs at Oracle today, or was yesterday literally D-day? Do we have a final number of how many people were let go total? It seems that Oracle is trying really hard to avoid having to send out WARN notices, from what I have seen so far.

New VP is not interested in shipping 11.4 since it will not affect bare metal.

In term of system, it looks like fs1 and tape are safe so far.

To answer the question about final numbers:

Ofer's org (ZFSSA) is down to 120 people total. It was 268 a week ago before this latest round of cuts. It was >450 a month ago before they started transferring people.

Markus's org (Solaris) is down to 211. That's pitiful compared to what it used to be, but I don't recall exact numbers. It was bigger than Ofer's org.

Management is doing some pretty impressive mental gymnastics to sell this as a positive thing. And they're delusional enough to think we're still going to complete some aggressive deliverables.

The truth is: the layoffs and death marches will continue until morale improves. They could have sold us off or transferred everyone to the cloud, but I guess it's easier to just swing an axe.

The bottom line is, it's not a question of "if" , it's a matter of "when".

I read a post on LinkedIn, which said "don't wait for the end to come , when you know layoffs are imminent, proactively start looking out". I am acting on it, since it's not performance related layoffs, it's business related. I am thankful to my management and big O, to keep me employed and giving me a chance to work with the best tech company of it's time. The brand name will help me get another job. And, it was my slack that I never jumped into the Cloud bandwagon. When my kids ask in future "dad, wasn't Cloud the zing thing, and couldn't you have done it ?" My only response is "yeah, it would have required 100s of hours of studying, so I chose to watch a movie with you kids".

It makes no sense to fire QA if they're serious about shipping 11.4. I'm guessing (and I'm pulling this out of my butt) that maybe they will keep a few QE's around until 11.4 ships. Of course, that's assuming that 11.4 will ever ship and isn't cancelled. And even if they do keep working on it, they might still fire all QA/QE's next month and just rely on ONPIT (assuming ONPIT isn't dismantled too) to be "QA".

I honestly have no idea what they're thinking.

Cant be true, can it be ? Not entire QA can be shut.....unless there is nothing new to QA ? What about StorageOS ?

" QA (unlikley as they were just cut)"

Actually, what I'm hearing through the grapevine is that all Solaris QA/QE's will be shown the door within a month, maybe less.

It's not like Solaris will vanish. Just nothing really new. The question is whether 11.4 will see the light of day.

So no Solaris and no Linux. What will run on Sparc?

Thanks, but 50 % is relative. If some team has 2 folks, and 1 is let go, thats 50%. Are we talking about 50% in Solaris TSC, Engineering, ServerOS, StorageOS, NPE, QA (unlikley as they were just cut), ES , RL or some particular orgs ? I just wish i were to be told and cut loose now, instead of torcher of reading rumors on this site every min. I wake up at 2:00 am and scan this site (like now) for updates.

Confirmed: I just learned that there are going to be more Solaris layoffs, as soon as next month, another 50% haircut.

According to the routine post layoff internal database query, looks like this round's headcount totals ~330 inclusive of John Fowler. Last night he was still in the internal Aria people tool and this morning there is no employee by that name.

"Oracle is trying really hard to avoid having to send out WARN notices"

That's true . Tricks it is playing include

  • staggered layoff's (monthly limit)

  • offering "retirement packages" to remove old people so that they don't come under WARN limit

  • ...
