Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Look around!

Being in a company as it downsizes/restructures is never fun and can lead to a desire to just escape. That is enough reason to look around. However, there are also positive reasons to look at other companies and you should do yourself the favor of seeing what you might be missing out on. I ended up finding...

  • A higher base salary

  • An increase in variable compensation

  • Better benefits across the board

  • Less out of my own pocket for benefits (a kind of "raise" in itself)

  • Real opportunity as there is ongoing growth of market share

  • Products that are real and work well today

  • A culture of respect, hard work and excitement

  • Customers who are excited to work together and want to do additional business

My only regret is that I didn't leave Oracle earlier.

For those of you who have been recently let go -- that is an absolutely awful experience, but the market is good and I hope that you land a position that ends up being even better than Oracle. For everyone who is still with Oracle, you owe it to yourself to check out what you might be missing!

I was laid off in Jan and found a job in 3 months. New job has no WFH and I work from 8 to 5 everyday. You know what? It's more fun because I finally work on products that people use and care.

Agree. It's truly nice to be working with good products (that actually work) and have customers and partners who is actually supportive of your company for a change.

There really is a life after Oracle.

Thank you for posting this. I was let go in June, and while initially it was devastating...people keep telling me there is life outside of Sun/Oracle. I hope so and I am thinking positively.

No. My intent is as stated.

From what I've heard, Salesforce, although successful, has an incredibly micromanaged environment and, in some ways, has a culture that isn't much different from Oracle. While you might be able to make some gains in compensation, it otherwise doesn't sound like much of a step up.

Having multiple statements now proclaiming that this thread is intended to manipulate and fool current employees is just a sad commentary on how Oracle's culture and management have been toxic.

I'll reiterate once more -- do what is best and right for you.

IMO, it comes down to (1) how long will it take to get hired and (2) will the hiring market change.

From my experience and based on stories I've heard from others, an average hiring process from starting point to starting date is 2-3 months. Having a severance package that is longer than that provides a nice cushion should things take longer or should something fall through.

The hiring market, especially around Cloud, seems to be at a high level right now as corporations are seeing now as the time to staff up in an attempt to grab marketshare. When that will change is unknown, but there should always be spots somewhere for skilled people.

I just decided to jump when I found an opportunity that I considered to be outstanding instead of waiting.

In general there is sense in what you say, and I would likely think in a similar way if the situation was different to what it is.

In the current status quo it is becoming cristal clear that certain roles/products/teams/orgs will be supressed soon. The key word is "soon". It is unlikely that the same market which is good today will be significantly worse "soon", so waiting for severance while spending as much time as possible learning new skills makes a lot of sense. Anything different than that only makes the company a big favor.

@OBri8Kc-tme and @OBri8Kc-1pmg - your assumptions are very wrong. I'm not HR (more about me later).

My point was simple -- look around! I'm not advocating running out the door, but to, at a minimum, take a look at the marketplace, do your own math on what makes the most sense and make a decision that is best for you. Obviously, having 25 years of employment would make for a severance package of 1 month plus 25 weeks of pay. That is a compelling reason to wait. My advice to you is to use the time at Oracle to sharpen your skills and to be ready for if/when a layoff comes along.

As for me, I'm into the later stages of my career and have experienced personal success over the years. I thought that Oracle could potentially be the place I work until retirement and have a significant chunk of time at the company too. My post is really just a statement about how surprised I was by how much better my new employer is. Still having friends who work at Oracle and knowing the stress of the situation coupled with the shrinking benefits/compensation, I am posting here simply to say that there are better corporations out there and that it is in your own self-interest to get some data points for yourself.

@OBri8Kc-tme and @OBri8Kc-1pmg - If waiting for a severance package is where your own evaluation leads you, I hope that it works out and that you enjoy taking some downtime and/or getting overlapping pay when you land a new job.

Agree with previous comment. I'm also just waiting it out until I get my severance package. For the past 6 mo I've been spending my days learning new skills and have done no real work whatsoever.

I was laid off a couple of months ago. It took a couple of weeks to get me the paperwork that I had to sign before I got my check. Which was 3 weeks late.

Waiting for severance package. Going to sit around pretend working. No raise and bonus? That's fine, I do near zero works anyway. Learning new skills that are in demand out there with company time. I guess, that's fair game.
