Being in a company as it downsizes/restructures is never fun and can lead to a desire to just escape. That is enough reason to look around. However, there are also positive reasons to look at other companies and you should do yourself the favor of seeing what you might be missing out on. I ended up finding...
-
A higher base salary
-
An increase in variable compensation
-
Better benefits across the board
-
Less out of my own pocket for benefits (a kind of "raise" in itself)
-
Real opportunity as there is ongoing growth of market share
-
Products that are real and work well today
-
A culture of respect, hard work and excitement
-
Customers who are excited to work together and want to do additional business
My only regret is that I didn't leave Oracle earlier.
For those of you who have been recently let go -- that is an absolutely awful experience, but the market is good and I hope that you land a position that ends up being even better than Oracle. For everyone who is still with Oracle, you owe it to yourself to check out what you might be missing!
