Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

I got laid off - here's the deal on the severance

JF's org: 20+ year Legacy Sun - here's my experience:

Day of layoff - notified via phone by manager (I had a scheduled vacation day)

This is your official last day. Benefits end that day, no 30 or 60 day period to find another job.

Fed-ex package arrived later that morning with severance paperwork

Package included a live check of built up vacation time

I got the max - 26 weeks - lump sum direct deposited, provided once I sent back badge, laptop, etc.

Oracle pays first month of COBRA then you're on your own and it's VERY expensive!

Started looking for work two weeks ago and am a final candidate at two companies.

I would've enjoyed more time off if medical insurance wasn't so much.

Good luck and hang in there.

That information should have been in the package that was mail you. You should be able to contact Oracle HR.

Unless you have serious dental bills coming up why, as an individual, would you pay the $60/mo for dental? I paid the $450/mo option and dropped dental. 2 teeth cleanings per year is not very expensive. I'll just decline the expensive x-rays until I'm back on someone else's healthcare.

I was laid off June 1 and I don't think Oracle covers any healthcare costs after that date. Where do you find information stating they pay COBRA for the rest of the month or whatever?

My COBRA for United EPO, Dental, VSP = $805 per month for one person.

That vesting question has to be a joke.

Of course they do not.

Does anyone know if remaining RSUs or Stock options would be vested if laid off?

@ODn5jgI-2jtq This is kind of derailing the conversation, but just an obvious clarification (which may not be so obvious to some):

1) In a country with a socialised NHS-like health system, the difference between paying for private insurance is shorter waiting lists and maybe newer fancier buildings. In a country without it, the difference is being treated or rotting away.

2) In a country without a NHS-like health system, the premium for private insurance appears to be (judging by other posters) around 2000$ a month for a mid size family. In a country with a public system, the premium is also 2000$... a year.

Just so you have more grounds to judge the info you got from your relatives. It means very little applied to a system like the one in the US.

Some thoughts on single payer vs. socialized healthcare. With single payer we could keep our private healthcare delivery system. Think Medicare for all. Of course, there would still be cost growth issues and how to deal with them (higher taxes, rationing, etc,), just like we have with our private insurance system (ever increasing premiums, higher and higher deductibles and copays, claim denial, etc,)

A truly socialized system, like the NHS in the UK is a whole other ball of wax. I have relatives in the UK who have private insurance and avoid the NHS like the plague.

What I think we can all agree on is that our current system in the USA is too expensive.

OP - Was it one month of free Cobra, or was the insurance simply extended through the end of the month (many companies do that) or was it both (or neither)?

Of course, there is no guarantee they would still do that.

Just call Blue Cross Blue Shield in your state and get an individual policy you'll actually save money. I have one for my family and it's cheaper than the Oracle plan was before cobra and it's very good coverage !

Just to confirm, we don't fully-vest on any remaining stock options right?

Healthcare is such a joke in this country. They need to just do single payer and get it over with!

COBRA costs 110%.

That means you are paying 100% of the negotiated Oracle plan rate + 10% for admin charge.

You might want to shop around if any obamacare plans are available. Chances are better if you are in a major metro area as there's more options.

Cobra for UHC if you take the family plan is about $2300/mo.

Having to pay COBRA should make most people who don't think we need single payer healthcare in this country come to their senses. So many of us have good insurance because of our jobs. Take away the job and you are F**KED It is one thing I'd be willing to pay higher taxes for. I am probably going to be RIF'd in the next 2-6 months as I'm legacy Sun, too. I'm lucky I only have to pay for myself, I really feel terrible for folks who are supporting a family because the COBRA is so expensive. I guess I can try to find a cheaper plan via Obamacare before Trump dismantles it...

COBRA cost varies a lot. There are 11 different plans based on your geography and your choice (e.g, United Healthcare Medium, Premium, EPO, and HDHP) times different prices for 1 adult, 1 adult plus children, 2 adults, and family.

for United Healthcare Medium, it's (1, 1 plus, 2, family): 604.42, 1027.68,1209.05, 1812.82

for United Healthcare HDHP, it's (1, 1 plus, 2, family): $450.37, 765.64, 900.75, 1350.57)
