Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Oracle's reputation precedes it, it seems

Oracle offers graduates of top CS programs competitive packages and even slightly better than average packages. Yet, relatively few take those offers. One candidate we tried very hard to recruit (MIT grad) said that he heard Oracle was slow, bureaucratic, and didn't give new grads challenging work. Oracle definitely has a poor reputation with the top universities. Even more telling is that very few of the hires stay past the payout of their hiring bonus (paid over 2 years). Many leave before that. If someone leaves significant money on the table, you know they hate their jobs. Most development jobs at Oracle s--- due to bad management. With so many good jobs for CS grads, why would they come to Oracle or stay at Oracle? As an early poster said, only the old guys with kids in college or close to retirement stay.

The developers in the bare metal group are getting paid 2 or 3 times the usual salaries and they still have to pile on options and bonuses to get them to stay. Oracle just doesn't have the culture to keep a good development organization, at least not in the US.

I can't speak about fresh grads, but for hiring mid-career people, I can assure you Oracle's reputation really hurts hiring. We need to offer ridiculously generous pay to convince people to take a risk and come here. They all know that there is no job security and the culture s---s.

I would have loved to work with and support a Linux on Sparc product. Maybe a few of the vast numbers of customers who abandoned Solaris after 2009 would have stayed around or come back.

What's the purpose of this thread ? I would have killed to get into O, and I was glad to get in. Although there are some things like layoffs which could have been handled better, O doesn't have an overly bad reputation when it goes out to attract talent.

The author is clearly trying to paint "everything is bad about O" , but I can assure you nothing is far from truth. It's a great company, just some opportunities to improve on RIFs.

If the Hardware group had been integrated in to Oracles vast BUs and busted up, not left as SUN. It would of succeeded. Fowler, along with his middle level management caused the systems group to fail. Not adopting LINUX on Sparc, or offering to integrate Solaris security and stability in to Oracle LINUX. So there you go, Solaris gone and Sparc out the door, so long ZFSSA. Oh fvcking well.
