Flip off your boss in the middle of a team meeting?

Oh wait. You said laid off. Not fired.

Have you tried doing really sloppy work or publicity disagreeing with your boss often?

Actually just disagree with your boss. I think that's sure to get you a golden ticket at Walmart.

Absolutely, work for a boss who doesn't stand behind his people, you will get laid off, because you will become invisible to the organization. Know though, that bosses like this are not just spineless, they are typically manipulative weasels too.

Here is how it plays out: You are doing great work, and getting great reviews (all Role Model and Exceeds Expectations ratings), but it isn't enough if this bad boss is keeping that to himself. Why you ask would he do that? Well, you just might have is a PARASITIC BOSS that takes credit for your work. It gets worse, if your boss feels that his shortcoming are about to be found out, or he's involved in some questionable things, and is the least bit threatened by your skills and accomplishments, you'll get let go. He will put your name on the layoff list to save himself. With this he buys himself time and can s--- at his job awhile longer, publicly playing the martyr and whining about how he's had to sacrifice team members to the layoff cause.

As soon as you recognize that you have a weasel like this for a boss, start your job search and leave on your terms. You'll be much happier with the knowledge that the parasitic weasel cannot survive long in the current employment climate without a victim/host.

No when. No want. No worry.

Just don't s--- up to your boss. Or work for a boss that doesn't speak for his people in the par ranking meetings.

I think that the bet way to be laid off at Wal-Mart, is to be a white male and to just show up for work every day.

Perform poorly until time right before you know you'll be terminated, & then go to HR with reasons why you are being treated badly if you can come up with discriminatory things even better. They will pay you to go as a risk mitigation because if you take severance you forfeit your ability to file legal action. Easy peasy. Sad era at Walmart. :(

I see a future where it's Groundhog Day every day because the turnover becomes so extreme. They will definitely have a younger work force. But the company will keep making the same mistakes over and over because they've purged all their history.

If I'm correct, this is very sad.

Yes, mass exodus is in Walmart's future. Don't let this situation get you down. Leave now while the market is very good and look for a position in a stable company. Get out before the trade war with China begins...

In years past you would only see this type of poor morale in certain small groups across the HO, and it would usually only be temporary. It's crazy how everyone in basically every division feels this way now. Only sociopaths thrive in this new culture that has emerged.

I'd love to be laid off. I'm getting my affairs in order to start actively applying to jobs. The market is good right now if you have relevant skills. Reported salaries through indeed.com in my area show about 40% difference from what WM pays me currently. It'd be so amazing to take some "paid time off" while I line up my next gig. We can only hope! Don't let Walmart get you down...

This is true. I received a dev needed on one competency, first one in 15 years and was let go a few weeks later. And PTO is also right on, take it while you can. I had 25-30 days to take off but was only given compensation for 5 days after layoff.

Here is some advice; If you think you are going to be impacted go ahead an start using your PTO time to search for better opportunities and spend more time with your family & friends while you are still on payroll. At the end of the day the decision has been made months ago and there is no reason to lose sleep over a position that is about to be obsoleted because at the end of the layoff process Walmart is going to compensate you for only 5 PTO days.

If you notice "paper trail" behavior or receive feedback setting you up for development needed, it is already over.

Last round of layoffs they paid severance (for those on plans). That can get expensive so no telling if they will simply fire those with bad PRs in future rounds. Better to leave voluntarily if you get increasingly negative feedback, don't wait around to get laid off because you will most likely get escorted out like a criminal with no severence.

If you get development needs, I think they just fire you don't they?

If all you need is a development needed, based on my recent feedback I am golden! Don't mind at all being the " sacrificial lamb" and snag a golden ticket cannot wait to get out of this toxic dung heap!

Try the suggestion someone mentioned in another post. Volunteer to lead the Walmart cheer in a divisional and kneel during it. It could get you on the sh*t list, or it just might get you promoted!

Yes, the fresh culling process for this quarter is already underway. It will happen every quarter. God help us all.

Yeah. I'm hearing the same in regards to the evals. They have to give some crappy rankings and set a few people up to be culled is the rumor. That way when the manager goes into the ranking sessions they can save their favorites.

God help you if you work for a boss that isn't in favor, can't get things done, won't speak up for their people, or has been denied resources. Those managers will lose the battle of the rankings and their teams will suffer. Sad thing is, the employees won't be able to get out due to the three year rule.

But again. This assumes the rumors are true. I don't know if they are or not.

All you need is to have a "Development Needed" in any section of your annual evaluation. Trust me, I know.

If you are on a PIP wouldn't you just get fired though? With no golden ticket bonus? Does Walmart lay off everyone instead of fire?

I believe they meant PIP - Performance Improvement Plan. Basically just start s---ing at your job, but not enough to get fired.

Wow, I'm in good company it seems. I've been with WM less than 10 years. When I started, I envisioned working here for 35 years or until I could retire, whichever came first, but this place has changed SO much and not for the better. In our last divisional quarterly meeting, our SVP said (not in as many words) to not worry about layoffs because it doesn't matter if you get laid off or not, this is an exciting time to be at Walmart regardless. That was the gist of it. In yesterday's quarterly, the only mention of layoffs was to tell us to stop gossiping about it. Hey, man, maybe when you quit laying off my friends, or come out and say it's over, we'll quit talking. But he can't, because it's not over. This is the new normal. My director also recently told us that meeting the status quo isn't good enough. On par is below par. He was told to be extra harsh on the upcoming mid year evals. It's like they have no concept that not everyone is an extroverted super motivated go getter. Some people are happy at their current level and would serve loyally and excellently for many years. But they'd rather hire promotion hungry grads and cycle them through, condemning the company to constant training and paperwork. The new 2/3 year rule won't be enough to combat that, and you can already see that the culture has suffered. But whatever, if performing my duties with excellence isn't good enough anymore, fine. I'll come in each day with zero incentive to bust my butt, collect $100 and pass go, and look for something else. Thanks for letting me down, Walmart. Didn't know you had it in you.

What person with a sane mind actually wants to keep their Walmart job? For the same stress level , disrespectful treatment, annual stack rank culling and job insecurity we could get another job that pays at least 20% - 50% more it is a no brainer writings on the wall for Bentonville workforce

I feel the same - dreading to come to work because it has become the most depressing place (WM HO) I have ever been employed. It's like zombie-land at the HO. All our current directives - automating and abend prevention - means we are making our jobs obsolete or outsourced.

NOTE: Abend aka Abnormal End. The unexpected failure of a piece of computer software.

It's all a game of Russian Roulette. Eventually your time will come and they kick you to the curb.

I want to leave also but I ask advice of my friends. They tell me to hang on. I get paid decent enough that I can save for retirement here. I'll milk that for as long as I can, take the severance and find a new job when my time comes. A even better one. One where I feel like a valued member of the team. One where the stress is nonexistent or minimal. One where I am a name and not just another drone doing my job.

In the meantime, hang in there. Take training and develop new skills. Keep your resume updated and posted. (I get up to a dozen e-mails a day for jobs around the country.) Save your money because more than likely you will have to pay your own way to relocate. Declutter your home in case you have to relocate. Make sure you spend time outside work doing those things you really enjoy. Meditate! Exercise to burn off that stress. Finally, keep your options open in case you have to go back to school for a career change.

As an aside, and before WM, I had a friend at another company that was treated like crap. He moped around his house outside of work. His wife finally asked him, money and any excuses notwithstanding, what would you do for the rest of your life? He thought about it. He said being a truck driver. His reason? He was sick and tired dealing with stupid people in the corporate world. He had a CDL so he became a local school bus driver to refresh his license. He then went to truck driving school, passed and became a cross country driver.

Same here.. Working for Walmart is getting worse by the minute. Put me out of my misery.. Lay me off and give me A. A decent severance package. B. My unemployment. C. All of my 401K. I'll rest for awhile and move on. I would feel 💯 percent better. 😉😉😉😉
