BI: Rest and Vest Concept Investigated

Business Insider covered the concept of "REST&VEST" in the Silicon Valley (link below) - here is the summary:

  • The most open secret in Silicon Valley is called "resters and vesters," or "coasters" – which refers to engineers who get paid big bucks without doing too much work, waiting for their stock to vest.

  • We talked to engineers in the "rest and vest" world who explained how it happens and how they spend their days.

  • As cushy as it sounds, there are some real career risks and pitfalls for doing this rest-and-vest thing.

@OMHGUVw-4rnc are you one the of coasters?

The RSUs are used to award employee performance and you're entitled to whatever granted to you. No one can take it away from you. And it's not arguable many old-timers made contributions in the past.

However, the main problem here is many coasters are making destructive contributions by playing politics to kill new innovation, resist better approach because it's not your original, give inefficient

project guidance, and refuse suggestions.

Do you agree to these?

It's ridiculous to complain about vesters. The fact is the RSU was granted to reward and retain these people for past contributions which helped QC succeed. If they are coasting now complain about the managers who awarded the RSU. Also the manager holds some responsibility to continue cultivating these people for continued work product. Also RSU envy is not very appealing. Focus on developing your skill. Be the best you can be and the rewards will come to you at the right time.

I left a year ago because of these old timers barking at me when I try to fix existing old crap to use new available tech, and forcing me to stick with bad designs to simply "not change what is working" (although it is old and not efficient design). These old timers.have only one philosophy.. "dont rock my boat, plug the holes with band aids".

I would say the biggest issue of QC today is these coasters with very limited or out-of-date skill set. Unfortunately, most of them have a higher rank or even a lead position by staying 15+ years. They can irritate the more competent guys by contributing nothing and arguing their own plainly worse design proposals for hours. Guess what, the latter does more damage!!

Eventually, competent guys left and they continue to rest and vest. No company will pay 200K+ for someone who cannot make constructive contributions.

Sadly I see quite a lot here.

Wow. This articles covers qcom spot on. Sooooo many old timers who are coasting and rest and vesting.

So many are just carrying along untill the boot comes along in the form of a beautiful severance package. Pretty sad to see these lifeless ambitionless folks. Chaining themselves down and milking qcom with bare minimum contribution if any at all (and in most cases not even the bare minimum)

Qualcomm needs to re-evaluate or re-interview the old timers who have been here longer than 10-15 years to justify their employment at Q and high pay.
