NYT: The Incredible Shrinking Sears

How a financial wizard took over a giant of American retailing, and presided over its epic decline:

Imagine a retailer that began by specializing in just one product, then grew into a mammoth that redefined the American shopping experience.

Among its innovations: No matter where you lived, it shipped your order directly to you, whether you were looking for cast-iron cookware, a mandolin, the newest technological marvel, or the latest in petticoats.

Amazon, right? Actually, it was Sears — a century ago.

Great article. Sad, though, on a lot of levels. Eddie sacrifices everyone else at the altar of his own wants (very Randian) and dismisses other humans as not being worthy of consideration. I wonder if he's happy or is he Citizen Kane.

Another big factor is their website is trash till this date its very buggy very sluggish very dated. What made Amazon a place to shop online is the simplicity along with great customer service. Sears doesnt have none of that. If Sears would of invested in its actual stores and online it would of been the corporate giant, but they never invested where they should of.

If only sears had jumped into the online arena in the '90s. Just brand any online store as the 'Sears catalog' and it appeals to young and old. Same principle, ship your product to you anywhere. Would there have been store closings? Sure - likely. But with more and more online shipping, the stores could have been basically display cases for what you want shipped. Pick out and buy a pair of pants that you like (and that you can try on for size) and get 3 more shipped to your home. Wanna get your hands on that chainsaw (see a previous thread haha) and heft it for weight before you buy? Come check it out, but get it shipped to your home or business.

But Sears didn't do that. And pushing into the online arena NOW, just the last few years is way too little too late, not to mention the 'rewards' and 'members' silliness that only serves to bait the customers with no real returns or benefits.

Is a re-hash of sorts - Sears: Death by a Thousand Cuts - reading between the lines it explains very well what has been known for a decade or more --- Fast Eddie only wanted the real estate
