Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

massive layoffs should make it to headline news.

based on Aria there is almost 900 employee in HW alone, not to mention other area that will be impacted.

if the layoffs happen as expected this Thursday, I have no idea how Oracle will be under the radar this time.

Oracle management is simply doing what any good corporate management team would do in this situation. They are phasing out a low margin and shrinking segment of its business, which improves the profit margin and growth rate of the overall business. They are actually obligated to do this on behalf of the shareholders.

You can fault Oracle for how they actually handle the layoffs, but you can't fault them for phasing out the hardware business.

Also, it's not like Oracle is kicking the Sun folks to the curb. The severance packages have been pretty generous.

Any news story here has more to do with a changing industry and business model than anything else.

Oracle owes you nothing. You get a paycheck and benefits for your work. Fair trade. So if they don't need you any longer because of a shift in business strategy, it is fair that they eliminate some positions. You're not entitled to get paid for doing nothing so quit your whining, people. No, I'm not HR or management, just another IC like most of you. But I understand that I am NOT entitled to a job from Oracle nor do I think they owe me anything. Move on!

That is why it is important that people who get laid off get intouch witu local papers/ tv stations. National media picks up stories from local media so call up your local media and let them know asap!!!!! Oracle is not all powerful; they just want to create this impression so people are passive. Fight back !

Oracle legal works hard to make sure the layoffs do not make the news. They will cheat, skirt and abuse the laws to make sure nothing gets reported. Unfortunately, Oracle has big money and a big legal team and knows how to ignore the laws to an extent. There will be big layoffs and it will not be reported, again. Laws only apply to the little people.

WARN is also US related. They can layoff globally and in separate states and do it in waves.

If oracle shuts down sparc or all of hardware it will make news even if it is a small percentage of people laid off.

By the way all of Sun has about 3000 people ballpark. I guess Sparc alone had maybe 500 or so. Not sure if 900 includes both sparc and x86.

But 2% of Oracle laid off in one go is still news I think

The company has ballpark 150k people. This won't make news.
