Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

SPARC and Solaris are dead.

That's right.

Layoffs will be coming for SPARC HW and Solaris/SPARC Systems group.

Word is out to folks to seek positions in other areas in the company.

The only folks remaining will be for sustaining since they still need to

support existing systems (like M8, not sure why people still want to buy

SPARC..). It will be bloody. Oracle is doubling/tripling down on

Linux and Cloud effort because AWS is eating its lunch and LE is terrified.

Linux won the OS war...

Judging on @P23GpT5 Solaris is pretty much done.

I stopped caring about Solaris in my little piece of the business a couple of years ago. I'm all OL all the time.

Where "Word is out" came from? Who/When/Why(it's apparent tho)?

Without the confirmation of the source, it's only one of speculations and you're just simply upset to it.

Besides that some media should bring it on the net, especially some geek sites.

The whole Niagara thing was another classic example of horrible mismanagement by the Sun execs. Niagara was based on the Afara acquisition. Ironically Afara was started by someone from Sun who left to pursue a high multi core/thread design because he couldn't get the approval within Sun.

Once Sun completed the deal it took a few years before the acquisition morphed into Niagara program due to internal bickering over system road maps.

I believe JF was actually in charge of acquisitions at the time the Afara deal was done.

Mobile processor are all ARM based. Sorry, SPARC has no chance there. Nobody wants to recompile their apps on SPARC.

Maybe Apple will buy SUN .. new rumour?

Yes totally. The iPhone 9 will run on Solaris SPARC. It needs a Plutonium battery. Plus Solaris' legendary multimedia and graphics capabiliies. Apple is tossing tens of $$$Billions of R&D investment in ARM64 in the trash bin. Because SPARC is where it's at.

"Maybe Apple will buy SUN .. new rumour ?"

Given apple recruiter activity - unlikely. They've been poaching engineers for years from the SPARC CPU ranks.

It stared when AB convinced Sun x86 was as good as SPARC. We (as a customer) moved from all Sun to Linux/86 grids for our silicon dev apps. The relative superiority of SPARC was gone. Niagara was the icing on the cake. Significant shortfall in single thread perf AND forcing customer to upgrade Solaris -- again. Then Sun failed/cancelled the HiPo multicore chip. By the time LE figured things out it was too late. He tried to fix the perf issues, but the ship, as they say, had sailed.

@OVU7tpS your post is not about giving more information, your post is about being offensive and negative. everything mentioned people already knew. so your post is useless. just go back under the rock where you've been sleeping for the past week, we already know all that, and take your negativity with you.
