Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Question for Corporate SYW division

Dear SHC, I've noticed despite your poorly executed advertising that you have expanded your SYW program to include points for shopping online at other retailers such as KMart competitor Target. In fact, you can earn 4% & 5% back in points shopping at retailers such as Hot Topic which is a higher % than shopping at your own stores. Your own stores that you now call Partners, the same as you call Hot Topic on your site.

After moving past your lack of loyalty to your own formats, such as at least elevating Sears & KMart into premier partner status, I have been plagued with this question.

WHAT is the incentive for the members to chase points if all they can buy with these points is overpriced poor quality items?

Which is what you currently carry in your stores and it seems to be getting worse as vendors leave you & you try to cut costs beyond what is reasonable.

The points conversion to merchandise is the same as when you win tickets at Chuck E Cheese or the arcade and for 20,000 tickets you can get a small stuffed animal and a sticky frog. But at least you had fun playing so the prize doesn't matter. I guess people can buy odds & ends in your stores but how long is this sustainable? Arcades are seasonal. Most people don't go too often. Have you thought this through?

So it is true that the Decision to Close Dulles Town Center Sears is possible for May 2018?

Right now you can only redeem points for merchandise though? I agree it's like the arcade prize box.

All the shopping portals are profitable. SYM even more so (to shld at least). The points are good for using on tools and a few other items as long as you're using coupons and waiting for the right sale prices.

Many of the other portals frequently pay 10% for shopping at Sears. SYW pays well for certain stores at given times (Best Buy is one, they pay on Apple products when others don't)

But I would agree the amount of decent merchandise is running low (though I did get car tires that I paid for completely with points recently)

But yes, there are a number of people who use SYW as a portal to other stores and then spend those points at Sears and kmart. SYW would do better if they offered a cash out option (but would have to be like 50% rate vs 100% if redeemed at sears) or hell, give away SHLD stock!

@Pimdaddy how do you know plenti is earning money (how much)?

SYW seems to be as good as plenti.com but less interesting than cashback sites like ebates.com.

Also it seems to have stopped growing members.

I hear what you're saying Daddy. I haven't used such a service since mypoints years ago to get gift cards to places I like to shop but I can understand using a portal to earn CASH or to make automatic donations to a school or charity. I understand the rewards aspect to many credit cards.

What I don't understand is the payoff here. How many people are going to want to do this medium to long term?

No offense but the SYW points only get you Sears or KMart merchandise, not a great reward. Don't even mention those unreliable 3rd party fly by night operations on the website. I work for Sears and I cringe at what's in the stores especially when I visit other locations and look around with fresh eyes.

SYW is meant to be a "shopping portal". Clearly no one on here understands this.

How do you think Google makes money? You google "Eddie Lambert Mask" a link to a Halloween store comes up, you click on it. That company PAYS Google. Google keeps it all,

In this case, Target, Best Buy, Hot Topic etc. PAY SYW, they in turn pay you a portion of what they received out to the member w/points. That's why SYW is one of the few profitable pieces in this mess. SEARS pays SYW X who pays members Y. There are other portals for Sears/KMart that pay as much as 12% (in cash) to people who shop through their portal.

Plenti is the same concept. And its making a fortune.

This IS the end game. Eventually all that will be left is SYW, Sears web presence with some regional shipping hubs aka Stores, some smaller bed/mattress shops and diehard centers. SYW will rake in $ (cause it costs almost nothing to operate) and people will click through and buy while Eddie gets paid.

The SYW is supposed to be the be-all-end-all of SHC. If the rewards that members always get more of are either inferior to standard products or nonexistent, what is the point of the company pushing the program?

At least allow for a 90 day return policy for members. Something for being loyal.

Because he's trying to fluff the numbers to show some 3rd party. "See the shop your way program is popular and it doesn't cost nearly as much as you'd think because no one uses their points ."

The magazine promo is one of my SHC favorites. Pay full price for magazines and get the $$$ back in points. It reminds me of buying that candy & wrapping paper that supports my kid's school. You pay $12 for a roll of wrapping paper or a stale box of chocolates & the school gets a small % of the proceeds.

Why the analogy? You can easily buy the magazine, wrapping paper or chocolate for 80% less through normal channels leaving you with savings to spend exactly how you wish. No strings attached.

Huh? SYW is not a third party program lol. SHC very much owns it. Perhaps eddy has set it up as a separate business unit that pays back stores or some such scheme, but i promise you SHC is still the owner. You are thinking of Plenti which is run my American Express and several stores including rite aid Macy's etc participate

SYW is not a sears program, it is a 3rd party program that SHC participates in. Someone shops at participating retailers and earns points, points are redeemed for merchandise at SHC and SYW cuts a check back to SHC

Or the store is like the prize booth at the fair. This is what we have become?

The credit card is like figi, fingerhut or Swiss colony. Overpriced, low end merchandise sold at a very high interest rate to people who can't afford it.

The SYW points get you some merchandise and the rest you payoff at punishing interest rates. It's almost identical.
