Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Extremely political and toxic culture

I spent a couple of years at Intel Hillsboro as an engineer, and left the company months ago. Now I'm enjoying a much healthier and pleasant working environment at my new company. It feels like enjoying breeze on beach of Hawaii with beers, after eating rotten meat.

I don't think i would be able to find a company being political & toxic at such a high level. There are many smart people at Intel and I feel sorry for them for working in such an environment.

  • Many managers are busy with their political games, instead of doing actual 'management'

Many managers don't 'manage' employees, they manipulate them. They don't care if their employees actually grow along the time, or be initiative and creative on new ideas. They only care whether his employees actually deliver what he asks them to do. Surprisingly, they look to hate employees who is being creative and motivated. I heard one manager saying: "that guy asked me for some difficult new tasks. I simply let him work on a boring and daunting one and after that he never asked for it". And my personal experience: i proposed to my manager several times on potential new ideas\innovations, he simply ignored them. Also some managers reject high profile candidates simply because certain candidate is referred by someone he dislikes.

  • Some so called 'senior\staff' engineers are extremely arrogant AND ignorant.

I used to see a senior engineer commenting peer's code in dirty words, and ironically his point was wrong. Once I proposed a new idea to a senior peer, he didn't seem to understand but he responded:"I don't think your idea is gonna be supported by management". These 'senior\staff' carefully pick their teammates. They never pick ones who are willing to learn and grow, because that'll jeopardize their position at the company. If you are creative, willing to learn, you'll never be able to work with them. They simply ban you from the team, and their meetings\email threads. At the same time they are so complacent with their outdated knowledge and skill sets, and consider they are on top of the world. At any time if you outperform your senior peers, they feel offended - and after some time, you will be out of the game.

I want to emphasize that not everyone at Intel is like what I described above. There are still smart and nice people. but unfortunately they are under the shadow of bad asses.

After Intel, people sometimes asked me, 'Why Intel is going downwards?' 'How Intel lost mobile market?' 'Why doesn't Intel produce AI chips?' 'Why huge layoff?' i've got my answer..

x86 franchise, thanks to the vision of the 3 founders, served to hide the rot within for 2 decades. CB, PO and BK simply rode the wave with no original contribution and set the stage for a progressive decline and it's not so progressive anymore.

You are bing one. Loyalties matter most in long corporate chains. Too bad colleges don't teach politicking, or the so called soft skills.

All the failure starts in the corner office! After Andy it has been down hill faster and faster. Each successive CEO was worse and worse and now we got BK. How does he stand compared the tech titans from Google, MS, Amazon, Apple, Nokia, Samsung, TSMC, Nvidia, AMD. I encourage you all to research their path to the corner office compared to BK. Don't be fooled by the fluff. Not too hard to be a manufacturing monkey 🐒 running a captive monopoly selling chips for 10x more than what others can. Doesn't take much to manage that, just to ability to fake your way to the top.

Sadly the BoD is also a sorry group and didn't have the courage and picked BK, that pretty much seals Intels fate.

Feel bad for those that need 10 or more years, it'll be and ugly slide into the abyss for the company.

Well - a bit of perspective. This back-stabbing sabotage behavior has been endemic for 20+ years. First happened to me in a career influencing way in 2001. Also seemed across the org - my TMG buddies (and former TMG buddies) told about back-stabbing 20 years ago where no one helps you with your 'tool', no mentoring, orientation, "assigning a buddy" like they used to years ago, nothing.

Back-stabbing didn't appear limited to any ethic group either - the guy who stabbed me in 2001 was a US-citizen who happened to be of Polish descent. A real career climbing schmoozer who eventually "picked the wrong ladder". And for the record (as a white guy) I've actually had a majority of positive experiences with my Indian & American-citizen Indian peers. The few instances where it wasn't positive can be easier attributed to their personal makeup IMO.

Can't say Intel was materially any different from other corporate culture experiences I had. All performance reviews are popularity contests. Greed brings out the worst in people and their motivations. Pride and arrogance is a common problem when everyone and everything around you agrees with you and you begin to fool yourself you are smarter than everyone else. I like this Steve Jobs interview on this point - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvEiSa6_EPA .

What they are describing here is called the Bozo Explosion. B grade mgrs hire C grade etc. Enough of those for 2 decades and yiu just killed your company.

Intel cannot "teach" their way out of this problem with an online course for management. They must remove ALL invasive species if they want to create a high standard culture.

But seeing how BK runs the house, he doesn't have the company introspection or the balls to do the job. Game over.

Amen. The moment we even suspect a candidate is Intel we send the cv to the bin.

The Intel mgmt is atrocious. Why else has the company not grown in the last 15 years? Lack of mgmt vision and skills to move the company beyond the knowns. Same mgmt, same lousy decision making. They only promote their unskilled friends into mgmt positions to be trained to their skills which have already proven to be failures.

OP, good story telling on Intel current working environment. Political skill is the number one required skill as an engineer in Intel. Be careful on how to use your technical skills. If you are viewed as thread to higher grade people, they will back stab you. Just be careful and find way out.
