Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

RIF'd

I am a white woman over 40 that got RIF'd. However, as I was in sales and didn't make quota (neither did any of the men on my team excluding one guy who had a big renewal come due this year) I don't have a leg to stand on. Never mind that my 20-year Oracle veteran boss changed my territory (to much worse accounts) and doubled my quota after the first 2 months. In speaking with other reps who covered those same accounts, it was clear that my quota was 3-4x what anyone else was expected to do in that territory.

Those are the subtle ways that managers can discriminate against women. Essentially, setting them up for failure by making goals so far out of reach that only factors outside of your control could change the outcome.

Unfortunately, this isn't a problem just at Oracle. It's prevalent throughout the Tech industry for woman outside of traditional women's roles (Marketing, Finance, Admins, etc.) I think part of the issue is that a majority of men don't look at their women counterparts and think less of them. Most men are respectful, friendly and inclusive. They still hold the door open for you and help put your heavy suitcase in the trunk when on travel. These men don't notice the subtle snub of women because they would never do it. They don't pay attention to the fact that your boss tries to discredit all of your thoughts only to prove you right later on. They are immune to the times your boss calls men by their names but lumps all women together as 'girls' like we're mindless, giggling teens.

I hate the whole women's lib thing. I want a guy to hold a door for me and show me respect. I have an Ivy League degree and over 20 years of experience in the industry. Most of my male colleagues treat me well. Except for the ones that don't, the ones who ask me to sleep with them because I'm single or tell me to my face that my opinion doesn't matter because I'm a girl. One of the funny things is that the guys who have treated me the worst are the ones who have since been promoted within Oracle, while most of the 'good guys' I knew have moved to other companies.

stop playing the race, gender or religion card. It means nothing. In addition, it is your fault. You should have slept with the boss!

If u are a woman in tech and have not experienced the little slights, comments, omissions, assumptions that go with being in a heavily male field, you are either lucky or clueless.

Go to the Attorney General in your state and ask them to start a multi-state investigation together with other state AGs. State AGs do that all the time when it comes to large co's like oracle that operate across state lines. Given that you have the names of other women who were RIFed you're in a perfect position to make a difference here. Yes you can get MH fired again and collect $. What could be better !

Maybe it could also be you were not very good at your job? If you were, do you really think they'd RIF you if you were making your sales quota?

Normally, I would think its not targeted toward women. But this time I think it is. Every woman over 40 I know in Sales and Sales support was given notice, except one. Now what is interesting is they (over 3) of them were also snatched up and reassigned. Sadly I only personally worked with and knew of 5 women in sales and sales support over 40 (thats how rare they are)

4 were given notice, 3 were reassigned and 1 was let go. That means that 80% of the women over 40 I personally know of were impacted. 60% of them are still at Oracle. Which means Mark hurd will try to get rid of them again.

Apparently this is all pay back for what Mark Hurd went through with Jodie Fisher, an attractive non minority woman (now 57 years old) who was over 40 years old. @Oo4eah3

"No one discriminates against you because you are a women"

You, obviously, haven't seen the broader culture at Oracle. It all started with LE and MH and it has worked its way down from there. The original poster's perspective isn't overstated at all.

@OnB6sE1 - I hope that you find your way to one of the tech companies where women are valued, HR isn't just a shield for poor behavior and management treats you with respect. I'm sorry that you have been treated unfairly by Oracle and your management, but at some point in the future you'll hopefully be able to look back and be happy that you were freed from the dysfunction that is Oracle.

No one discriminates against you because you are a women, so stop playing the gender card every time you lose. I sympathize you have lost the job, but stop being a sore loser. Instead of saying it was done because I was a women, accept that in today's world your bosses get promoted if their teams do well, and they have no reason to shunt out a good team member "just because they are women". No one cares if you are a women, Droid, robot, h1b, Mexican, Scottish , as long as you are performing. And , someone's even after performing folks are unfortunately let go as business has changed, so that's the sad reality of Corp world.

I feel for you, but it's your own interests to keep away from tilting towards finger-pointing now. It's never fun to be fired, and very hurtful to see who was NOT fired. But, forget, focus, and move on.

Your org was run by MH, what did you expect? Even before his arrival, Oracle had a horrible reputation w.r.t. its treatment of women. Even guys who get caught here s-xual harassing their female subordinates generally only get a slap on the wrist. I've personally seen such guys go on to get promoted very soon after such disciplinary action. As you say, there are a lot of decent men in this company, but those types of guys do not get promoted very high up.

No. According to some of the internal statistics collected by the Math Department at Harvard since the mid 70s, it has been consistently shown that women lag behind their male counterparts when it comes to the math and sciences.
