Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

FAIRLY SOON, multinational companies will start laying off Americans working in the tech sector.

If recent history is any guide, they won’t hand out pink slips immediately. First, they’ll hire skilled foreign workers through the H-1B visa program. Companies will then use these workers to displace higher-paid American employees. Often, firms force the outgoing employees to train their less experienced replacements.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle have condemned this practice for years. But Silicon Valley’s lobbying dollars have made sure that tough talk never turned into real reforms. To protect American workers, Congress and the president should return the H-1B program to its original intent — an avenue to bring in foreign workers who possess exceptional skills not available in the U.S. labor force.
