"Amazon couldn't find a solution that met their own tech and cloud hosting needs so they built it."
When it comes to running a global business, major enterprise companies like Amazon will still use Oracle for something like financials or HR. And, I expect, that will continue to be the case. Oracle's strength is with its business applications and (although it is changing) database.
However, when it comes to needing to operate in a distributed environment at global scale, Oracle's monolithic and centralized model won't work and is far too expensive. Amazon brought in brilliant minds to design their software, compute, storage and network to do things that Oracle can't. Other major Cloud providers (e.g. Microsoft and Google) are doing the same. Oracle is stuck in a paradigm that is now outdated.
amazon actually makes use and innovates with their acquisitions
this one swallows its acquisitions, rubs it's belly, and p--ps them out the other end
The point being this: while oracle shrinks Amazon expands ...online retailer, online grocer and CLOUD hosting co. What a combo!
Amazon couldn't find a solution that met their own tech and cloud hosting needs so they built it. They started selling it to others like them. Opportunity presented itself and Amazon answered the door.
Others slammed it shut.
Amazon will be Costco as depicted in the legendary film Idiocracy
