Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Hmm

While I don't want anybody to lose thier job - I'd rather if they are going to do layoffs - they do it before the holidays - when a lot of companies are not hiring then.

Layoffs are sad - there is really no way to predict them. They will happen when they happen.

Always keep your resume, etc uptodate - one less thing to half to do. If you think you might be in the running of being let go - or are just not happy here - start looking now.

When it comes down to it - you have to look out for yourself - your manager is just that a manager. Regardless how good or not there are.

It would be good for employees if layoffs are done in Q3 and not in Q4 where most companies put brakes on hiring. However those layoff strategists don't think of employees at all. Layoffs are triggered by finance group where they work on calculations to achieve specific financial targets. Usually they need to reach an annual target by cutting down heads. The third quarter becomes ideal for layoffs as the fourth would be the recovery quarter.

Most engineering management folks have limited free will in layoff decisions. They might only in some instances asked to suggest named lists. even there a sword might be hanging on top of their own heads and they wouldn't even know.
