Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

If Nike just let go so many people why do they have over 100 jobs posted??

Because it is exactly as people are saying, they are getting rid of older employees who might have s bit higher salaries and more vacation time. I guess they forgot that these employees also have more knowledge, more experience and dare I say .... work ethic ... from an era where you go to work to work.

I have to grin at some comments on here. Frankly it's time for me to move on and quit checking this site. I felt comfort in knowing so many faced the same frustrations. I have a difficult road ahead finding a job at my age. It's a industry wide fact not exclusive to Nike. Myself and a few co-workers were actually told by a Sr director that Nike wanted younger people and we watched for the next couple years all the jobs hired under him were right out of college. They were also the ones who were shoulder tap promoted. The job postings were just a cover to protect themselves with HR. I have nothing against some of these hires. Some were good some were useless and don't care. Yes, HR was told about this and stated it's not Nike policy. But it didn't stop. Like many others on here have said. Don't think it can't happen to you because it can. And then you will be on this site like us laid off trying to make sense of being discarded. I wish all my work family still there much success. And my fellow unemployed the best on the new job search. We have experience in both work and life and we will survive!

"We got rid of some real pains in the a--, it won't be as bad as people making out"

Heard from mouth of well known VP

I thought there were federal regulations regarding layoffs. My understanding is that if you are laid off, your position can not be rehired I think for a year. If you are fired, that is a different story. Anyone know if that is correct?

People who try to blame H1B holders or the younger generation should be ashamed of themselves. It's about proving to the organization your value. This is the rule everywhere in the world. If you create value, you get to keep the right to capture value. If you are confident enough about your worth and Nike is too blind to see that, then you won't have much trouble finding a better place And start again.

FYI - a lot of jobs posted are stale. They have been sitting there for a while and reqs will never get filled. At least in IT, not sure about other groups but I'd bet money they follow the same pattern.

Well said .. I was pressured to "retire " last year at age 56 after 33 years of hard working blind loyalty service to the company I love. Most if not all older employees I knew relished the chance to share the company culture and stories that have made the company so great. My observation was that many , and, refreshing not all, of the new employees hired in last five years wanted to know about the Nike past and characters. The problem is all they know in past five years is record PSP rewards ... unbridled hiring .. thirst Thursday's ... summer fridays .well paid athlete appearemces and a c---y and blind attitude towards the competition. The new leaders and younger teams have little experience going through workforce reduction and downturn in business cycles which is where the older crew can help and navigate ... keeping fingers crossed there is still enough experience on board to steer the teams and ship through these choppy waters ....

You have no idea why most were let go but it has nothing to do with not embracing the younger generation. But keep feeling like you have been slighted and complaining about it to a bunch of people who just lost their job. Your post shows exactly why you don't get it. You realize that the work of the people you are disparaging is the reason you have a job in the 1st place.

Generation work ethic gap? News flash, the older generation ALWAYS thinks the younger generation has a worse work ethic. The reality I've seen is some of the older generation get too comfortable and too entitled. The new generation come along with hunger and humility, often outworkong the old guard. There are still plenty of older folk that have kept their jobs at Nike. They're the ones who embrace the younger generation as teammates rather than deflect their own shortcomings on them simply because they're younger.

Actually heard that they are hiring for my position I was laid off from on Tues. I was informed that the VP told the team that he had no say, on Friday she was handed a piece of paper with her org chart going forward. Doesn't surprise me. Those laid off in my department all had at least 10 years and were on the higher salary range. The fact that it was a strictly numbers move makes it easier to take but makes me despise the company even more

I trained an H1B on the day I was let go.

Maybe some are legit, but a common practice these days by companies laying off masses and wanting to cover it up is to post a bunch of jobs.

Try applying for those jobs and more often than not you'll find them elusive.

True - generational differences in work ethic is so apparent - I find it sad the way I am hearing how people were told - I really question the confidentiality issue in this process. I know they are just doing their jobs but have some tact and diplomacy - oh and the new kids coming up they want to go up the ladder and will jump ship to find something better as well. My neighbor just moved and got a better job and he said once he gave his notice they just pile on the work and said he did not think they were going to replace his position - I am happy he got a better job - he is a lot better off!!!
