Just find out that two colleagues have had their meeting with HR today. The next round of layoffs is happening now.

Our group in Greenville finally got hit by this round. I thought my team would come through unscathed after nothing happening for two weeks, but we just lost two engineers. And there's a fear that there will be more people cut this round as well. Last time they said "if you haven't been contacted by such and such Friday, your job is safe." We've heard no such reassurance this time.
If GE lays you off, it will not come as a surprise and they will deal with you accordingly. As far as starting rumors about 2nd tier personnel being laid off, you ought to be ashamed. I'm not saying that it won't happen, just saying that when it does it will not be a surprise. First to go would be MAU contingent labor which is no small number. Second, all those jobs would be back filled by GE employees, then if there is excess, those employees would be cut into. Basically the company is in a weak position with excess capacity so it would appear that layoffs are imminent. Too much indirect labor is obvious, you simply don't produce anything. Not enough work for direct labor to cover the cost and make profit, the equation is fairly simple. I wouldn't want to be of the salary sort for sure, you didn't think they were inviting you to the table, did you?
