Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Nike is not your life

I was a Nike employee in Brand from 2003 to about 2007. I left of my own accord because of the never ending politics and need to mingle and connect with other employees to further the advancement of you own departments growth. I had always thought that the company could have been half the size and twice as profitable if they cut all the flab. Soooooo many meetings, so many approvals needed to move on the simplest of programs. In the end I realized that to survive and prosper you needed to shed your morals, play the game and get ready to point the finger where needed. They were the people that advanced and survived. When Trevor Edwards really started to rise to power in 2005 ish is where the culture of "life balance" really changed. Like others have mentioned, a 50 hour week is now considered part-time. Incoming call at 11pm, you better take it, take a flight out to an install on July 4th, you betcha; "we need you in NY on Thanksgiving" - absolutely.

The biggest problem of all though, is employees, and I mean lifers, thinking that Nike IS their life. Nike first, Family second, is almost the 21st century mantra. People need to wake up, be happy that they have Nike on their resume and start working to live and not living to work. One ladder climbing Exec. once told a NA group "It doesn't matter if you miss your kids school event, they're too young to remember anyway". . . . . . . . . And there you have it.

@pum someone should forward your post to Sanders...

At least we are organized on layoffs.com :-)

Organizing among peers could be an option but it is always an opportunity not to be wasted for the global tech company and their at the ready slaves to s--- the corporation's monetary reserves dry.

Personally, everyone I have met from Nike has bad manners. No substance.

I agree totally - dont sell your soul to the company store - as someone who knows a co worker who is dying of breast cancer and she is only 36 it means what.....she only has so much time and I agree that we all need balance in our life and family is number one.......we are all replaceable when it comes to employments - but not to our families......remember that!!!!

I agree with you 100%. Fear is a powerful weapon to be considered as well.

You are brainwashed to consume in order to gain status among peers and society. The more you have, "the smarter you are". Drive the car of the year, wear the clothing to impress somebody, buy the pompous house to scream at the world that you are one of the smartest, vapor millionaire. You have arrived, you are a happening person. not a loser that lives within his means and saves handsomely for the rainy days of corporate slaughter.

Fear of losing your job, keeps you slaving away. Fear to take vacations because that job may not be there for you, or perhaps a co-worker will work hard at stabbing your back while you were away. Fear that a temporary worker is smarter and cheaper than you and that you are next on the chopping block.

The American worker is totally enslaved, completely, no ifs or buts. If you have to work more than 32 hours a week, your talent or craft is mismanaged by yourself or the employer who owns you. Working 60 hours a week and neglect living, resting properly and thriving as a person is insane, but remember, a cheaper slave is sneaking his way in the building sponsored by some middleman "global tech company" that s---s everybody dry and in place to avoid paying benefits or to minimize liability.

The American corporate job market place is rigged. You are better off learning a specialized trade and go to be in business for yourself. A good electrician or a plumber has more tax deductions and more income to show for during a life time than any tech geek out there and best of all, he is a free person, free to take your job and shove it and move on to the next gig because the demand is always there, always. Not so for these companies that saturate the market place.

Organizing among peers could be an option but it is always an opportunity not to be wasted for the global tech company and their at the ready slaves to s--- the corporation's monetary reserves dry.
