Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

We are seeing the decline of a once great brand

In my group everyone laid off in June and Aug were over 40. Coincidence? I think not.

Regarding Nike wanting new blood from the outside, that’s another line of fake news. I was brought in from the outside and despite what I was told during the courtship, no one was interested in new ideas or ways of thinking. All they wanted was to conform, kiss a and make it known I was honored to be part of the greatest company ever. Sorry, but they were lucky to have me. There are so many disgruntled people left, I don’t know how this company will ever recover. I am so glad I don’t have to listen to a rehearsed pep talk “the only constant here is change!’ Meanwhile, other companies are gaining ground, moving in more nimble ways, attracting better talent. I think we are seeing the decline of a once great brand.

I am out and moving on and feel the biggest sigh of relief to not have to show up to that charade every day. The wrong people get promoted and rewarded. Good and fair people are cast aside. Bullying runs rampant. Venomous backstabbing is encouraged. There is a calendar but never a point where it can’t be thrown out the window. Gross examples of over spending and excess while necessities get squeezed. All the talk of change, yet nothing ever gets better. Reading all the other posts, I’m just grateful to know it wasn’t just me.

To those who are left, keep your eyes wide open. This place is not magically going to revert back to the good old days.

@PJZCGME-4wtw is your team hiring? Sounds like a one of a kind boss. Good for your mate.

Same thing happened to me but it ended entirely different. I also had years of mostly S and some HS CFEs. I had weekly touchbases and midyear reviews. Never a cross word, complaint or any word that anyone was not happy with me or my work. Plenty of at-a-boys and I led some major projects. This year was the first my manager actually took the effort to write up my CFE. Usually, she just entered the rating in the system. Much to my surprise, suddenly I am "not a team player." Do they know any other phrase? I am "difficult, reclusive and unapproachable." Really? Suddenly, I'm Kim Jong Un? Says who? She couldn't or wouldn't say, claiming it was feedback from an anonymous survey given to my peers and coworkers. I got my facts together and went straight to my plus one. He was as shocked as I was. I went back to work and passed my manager on the way to his office. She did not return. All of a sudden she is "taking some time off." My rating went in a-- and the write up disappeared. I got a special assignment on another team. She left in July. I am back with my team and still here. I am telling this story because I want you to have faith, there are good managers who will not stand for the BS and will stick up for you when someone is trying to screw you over. I remember reading that you take a job for the boss, not the work. Amen to that brother.

Nike managers know how to use anonymous surveys to target employees they want to fire. This has become more prolific with the use of online anonymous surveys. They will submit numerous responses themselves, all supporting their own manufactured allegations. It's impossible to trace or verify. Remember, at Nike it's more important to be popular than effective. HR will support removing any employee who is unpopular or not a good "cultural fit." That's the Nike way.

@PJZCGME-1yrb - I had almost the same experience except I retired before I was fired. Years of good work and great reviews and then all of a sudden I am "not a team player." If you believe my manager, all the people I worked with for years secretly harbored deep and hidden resentment towards me. No specifics or examples provided, everything was anonymous. Nothing was ever said during touch bases, quarterlies or midyears. I always had HS CFE's. I brought in reams of examples to demonstrate the last rating was off base and got the same "take it up with HR" response. They either all go to the same manager training or there is one person in HR writing all the negative reviews. We never discussed politics, s-x or religion at work but everyone knew I was not a typical Nike liberal. After the election it was never the same with me and my manager. I saw the writing on the wall and retired in January. My entire team went to my retirement party except my manager. If they really hated working with me they did a great job of hiding it at my party. Sadly, in June they were all fired, except the manager of course. Do thy master's bidding and you will go far.

Why do so many former Nike employees talk like they were just released after a long stretch in a supermax? I considered working at Nike once, even filled out the online and talked to a recruiter. I guess I wasn't what they were looking for because I never heard back from her after the first call. There must have been an angel looking after me.

Nothing says Doosh more than sporting a BIG SWOOSH!

People are growing tired with branding, marketing, and advertising... it's pollution... and it lacks "Corporate Responsibility" to the planet and its inhabitants.

Only outside scrutiny will force this company to change. Call these reporters. Once shareholders see the true state of the company they will either demand change or sell off. Either way the execs will be out and new blood will be brought in. I was there for years with great cfe's and multiple maxim awards. Then my manager blindsided me with secret, anonymous surveys saying I was not a team player, unpopular and difficult to work with. She couldn't give a single example because the surveys were anonymous. "That's the Nike way." I outlined all my work and examples that refuted the surveys but it didn't matter. I was told to take it up with HR. This started after the election. I didn't support NIke's "preferred" candidates so I was labeled a problem employee and out the door. Nike should replace "Just Do It" with "Conform Or Die."
