This is an interesting read. It is from the late 1970s. Sometimes the company will not let you leave. Keep in mind history does repeat itself.

Forced ranking does layoffs for Exxon. No need to do formally announced ones. And changing retiree benefits plans encourages early retirement because people want to leave with best plan not stay as it gets stripped down.
Layoffs would be bad press. Got to keep up appearances. Better to continuously fire the bottom 10% for low performance.
Does Exxon do layoffs ? Haven't heard of any
